World Compass Academy held its 4th spelling bee on Tuesday, December 17.

It was a momentous year with 27 stupendous spellers qualifying to compete, including a 1st grader! The competition was extremely tough and nearly 100 challenging words were spelled.

Our winner with the word 'Connemara' was 8th grader Bella N. Our two runners up were Jordan W. and William B.  A huge congratulations goes out to Bella, Jordan, William and all of our amazing WCA spellers!

First Grade ICE! Field Trip

First graders enjoyed a field trip out to the Gaylord Hotel in Aurora, to see the ICE! exhibit. Each year, the Gaylord hosts a different ice sculpture themed exhibit, complete with 2 million pounds of ice, sculpted by 140 Chinese artisans.

The exhibit is kept at 9 degrees and features an ice slide as you walk through the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Family Stories Workshop

This year some of our middle school students went to a Family Stories Workshop presented by a teacher from the Museo de la Americas. Read below to hear more about this workshop.

FAMILY STORIES - Illustrating Your Story
Meet vibrant Chicana artist and author, Carmen Lomas Garza, through her book Family Pictures // Cuadros de Familia.

Garza is known for telling her family stories through illustrations of family traditions and community. Through the workshop, students will discover and respect differences and similarities in the cultural heritage of Ms. Garza, themselves and members of their classroom community. Using watercolors, students will create a  painting expressing their own "family story".

St-Nicolas Celebration

Every year, the French program celebrates St-Nicolas on December 6. WCA students (K, 2nd-4th grade) made a paper St-Nicolas. One of the highlights of this celebration is  to leave one shoe out of the classroom.  While the students were expecting St-Nicolas visit, the French teachers read a story.  We have witnessed a lot of excitement as soon as St-Nicolas knocked on the door and rapidly went on his way.

Historical and Cultural Facts
Nicolas de Myre was born in Patara what is now located in Southern Turkey. Back in the year 270, Nicolas was referred later on as "protecteur des démunis''  (protector of the widows, children and ill people) because he left gifts and money for them.

This celebration is now celebrated not only in France but in many countries in Europe.  According to the Belgian legend, St-Nicolas travels on a donkey and drops spéculoos or fruits (mandarines) for children. In Nederlands, St-Nicolas travels on a boat and arrives for celebrating in many towns two weeks prior to Dec. 6.  On Dec. 5, the tradition called Pakjesavond,  is celebrated by leaving  a  surprise package near a chimney or on the front porch.
