Farewell to long-time Prevention Agency

As many are aware, on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, the Compass Pointe board of directors voted to begin orderly dissolution of the organization, with the date of April 15th selected as the final day of operations.

For AC4C we are losing one of the "Mother Mary's" - Mary Sloan.  Mary, a champion for all things prevention in Iowa, but in particular the Beer Tax, will be missed for sure.  She brought genuine passion to the prevention field and mentored many of us as we entered the field.  Another long-term employee, Jody Monroe is leaving us as well.  For the past several years she served as the IPDH PFS Coordinator for Emmet County.  Her commitment to prevention reflected her passion for giving all youth the future they deserve.  We will miss you both and all of the Compass Pointe staff.

The following is the announcement from IDPH regarding the transition for services:

As part of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) Integrated Provider Network (IPN) - a statewide network of community-based substance use and problem gambling prevention and treatment providers - Compass Pointe provided a valuable service to its community, which included the delivery of subsidized treatment services for individuals with a gambling or substance use disorder.

Upon receiving notice of plans for dissolution of Compass Pointe, IDPH began discussions with contiguously located IPN providers to determine interest in serving the ongoing needs of the community. As a result, IDPH is happy to announce that Jackson Recovery Centers, Inc. has agreed to assume responsibility for the service area previously served by Compass Pointe.
As Jackson finalizes their implementation plan which includes the opening of new prevention and treatment locations, IDPH understands there is an immediate need for services. Therefore, until services are available from Jackson, IDPH recommends that interested individuals or those wanting to make a referral, utilize one of the following resources:
* Your Life Iowa: https://yourlifeiowa.org/ or call 855-581-8111
* Contact Lori Hancock-Muck at lori.hancock-muck@idph.iowa.gov

What is it?

The Iowa ABD Age to Purchase App allows users to scan driver's licenses with their smartphone. No personal information of the customer is stored on the device. The built-in scanning function uses the camera feature on the device to scan the barcode on the driver's license to quickly help determine age and validity. The app also gives users access to a view similar to the desktop calendars previously issued by ABD.

The Iowa Department of Public Health's Bureau of Substance Abuse, with funding from the State Opioid Response grant through SAMHSA is pleased to offer this free "training of trainers" opportunity. Become aware of how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose, as well as train others in your community after participating in this training.

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - Waterloo - The Isle Casino and Hotel Waterloo
Thursday, May 23, 2019 - Council Bluffs - Hilton Garden Inn

This training will prepare individuals to conduct two different types of trainings. First, attendees will learn to train emergency responders (typically police, fire fighters, private security, or others who may respond to an emergency) on how to assess and reverse an overdose. This curriculum also includes information on substance use disorder as a brain disease and current global efforts to address the opioid crisis, including naloxone's appropriate role. This portion is focused on addressing an opioid overdose in progress.

The second training attendees will be able to perform after this event is primarily focused on overdose prevention.
This section is most impactful for individuals who will offer trainings to:
  • local health departments
  • treatment providers
  • social service and other community organizations and agencies
  • medical providers
  • emergency responders including law enforcement and fire fighters
  • security officers
  • college/university housing or residence life staff
  • other individuals who may work with at-risk individuals and respond to an overdose emergency
Training will cover: Overviews of Opioid Use Disorder and opioid overdose, overdose recognition and response including how to properly administer naloxone, managing overdose situations, and delivering overdose and naloxone education.
