August Already!

At this time of year I start to feel a real sense of urgency about summer slipping away... don't you? There are so many things I want and have yet to do, including nothing! So without further ado, here are some events to consider when pondering how to invest the balance of your precious summer time.

Bridgefest continues through 8/2 leading into the Newport Jazz Festival, from 8/3-8/5. I know less than nothing about jazz, but I do love Jon Batiste who is appearing on 8/4! NIMFEST's Free Gazebo Concert Series continues this month with featured artists performing 50's/60's/Bluegrass on 8/5, Swing/Pop on 8/12, Top 40/Soul on 8/19 and Brazilian/Reggae on 8/26. Follow the NIMFEST facebook page for artist updates. Music on the Law at St. John's features Mike Warner & the Ubiquitones on 8/23 and Dog Woolverton & the Groove Merchants on 8/30.

IF you are willing to cross a bridge or 2, the Narrows Center for the Arts is hosting the Outlaws on 8/2, Adam Ezra Group, 8/3, Angela Perley & the Howlin' Moos on 8/4, JAIMOE's Jasssz Band on 8/11, Mipso on 8/16, Shawn Mullins on 8/17, Dave Mason & Steve Cropper on 8/21 and Iris Dement on 8/24. Meanwhile across the Bay my picks at The Greenwich Odeum include the Bacon Brothers on 8/10 and Cindy Lee Berryhill on 8/1.

Tonight (8/1), the Jane Picken's Theater is hosting a Captain Blood Party with the Little Compton Band starting at 7:30pm. Other August one-off events include, Sammy Davis Jr: I've Gotta Be Me on 8/2, The Gardener on 8/6 and the Great Gatsby Movie Experience on 8/12. Three Identical Strangers will run from 8/3 - 8/9, followed by Spike Lee's Blackkklansman from 8/10 - 8/16.

If you'd like to see a movie under the stars, NewportFILM will screen Studio 54 on 8/2, Science Fair on 8/9, Chef Flynn on 8/16, Life in the Doghouse on 8/23 and Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable on 8/30. Ballard Park's Movies on the Rocks presents family favorites Rocky on 8/8, The Princess Bride on 8/15 and Bambi on 8/22.

If you've been reading lemonade throughout the years, you may have noticed that I've developed a love for local history; after all, Newport has been quite a happening place throughout American history! Events that have piqued my interest this month include: Two free Guided Tours of Common Burying Ground on 8/11 & 8/25, A Weekend of Coaching on 8/17-8/19, Life During the 1778 Battle of Rhode Island on 8/25 and William Waldorf Astor: American Tycoon to English Lord on 8/28.
