2018 Full-Time Priest Salary Survey
 A survey of the compensation for priests serving in full-time positions his now online as a working document for vestries to have in hand as we enter the time of year to plan congregation budgets. This is the eighth year that the salary survey has been published by the Diocese.
For the fourth year, the survey breaks out the compensation for priests working full time, by whatever title or duties, who are not in charge of a congregation.
The 38 priests on the two charts are only a portion of those serving our 70 congregations. This reflects the many congregations served by part-time priests, who are often bi-vocational or retired. For comparison purposes, the archived surveys from 2011-2017 each remain online in
the Reference Library at the diocesan website.
A Note on Priest's Compensation
 The compensation data in the chart reflects the combined total of salary, housing, and an offset for SECA (the self-employment version of FICA or Social Security). Priests must pay this 15% tax out of the listed compensation. For clergy in a rectory or vicarage, the value of that provided housing is included in the compensation figure. To assist in setting salaries, the diocesan staff works with vestries in a new call to consider salaries in neighboring dioceses, around the Diocese of Georgia. We also consider other salaries in the town by comparing to salaries in the school system (available at
www.open.georgia.gov). Depending on the complexity of the congregation, the salaries of teachers, assistant principals, and principals with a masters degree is instructive as these are local salaries with similar benefits.
A Note on Benefits
A large factor in determining a congregation's ability to pay a full-time priest is the cost of health insurance and other benefits. The clergy salary survey does not reflect the great range from a priest whose insurance is covered fully by the spouse's employer to those receiving full family coverage through the congregation. The Diocese moved to a standard of a high deductible insurance plan with a Health Savings Account to contain costs as much as possible.

Cursillo
Three Days to Deepen Your Faith
Cursillo is a short course in Christianity which equips Christians for leadership
and service to change the world for Christ through:
- an opportunity to grow in faith and spirituality
- a deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus and how we can serve Him and experience of living and sharing with others in a loving and caring Christian community and realizing that this can be extended into our own environment
- a continuing community that gives support and encouragement to help Christians carry out their Baptismal Vows.
 Cursillo includes a three-day weekend that begins on Thursday evening and concludes on Sunday.
The Cursillo weekend is not a retreat, but an opportunity to meet clergy and laity seeking to strengthen our faith. It provides an environment to experience the reality of the gift of God's love through shared prayer, individual meditation, worship, study, fellowship, laughter, tears, and unconditional love.

An Update on Presiding Bishop Michael Curry
 The Episcopal Church's Presiding Bishop, Michael Bruce Curry, underwent surgery on July 13 for Prostate Cancer.
The presiding bishop's family and his medical team reported later that day that the surgery went well, as had been expected. Bishop Curry is resting, and a full recovery continues to be anticipated.
On July 25, Bishop Curry shared
news that he had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and would be having surgery to remove the prostate gland. An Episcopal News Services release stated, "
Curry and his family are touched by the outpouring of prayers and well wishes. In their thankfulness, they ask for privacy during his recovery."

Register Today and Save on the Acolyte Festival
Acolytes in grades 3-12 will gather in Tifton for the Acolyte Festival at St. Anne's Episcopal Church on August 11-12. The time will be framed by worship, music, and play. B
ring your vestments for Sunday and a congregational banner for Sunday's festival procession. Come prepared to sleep on the floor Saturday night by bringing a camp mattress or an inflatable mattress, sleeping bag, toiletries, and clothes to change into for Sunday morning.
We will be offering multiple different training opportunities for Acolytes of every age from Grade 3-12. Those breakout sessions will take place during Saturday morning and early afternoon. They will include instructions on how to swing a thurible, how to serve at the Altar, what all the different vestments are and mean, and lots more! Saturday late afternoon will be a fun activity, and we will join in St. Anne's Sunday worship service on Sunday, August 12.
Congregations who send a group of Acolytes also register and send adults who are willing to engage with the activities and with the Acolytes throughout the weekend!

Happening
A Life-Changing Weekend for Grades 10-12
Led by teens for teens, Happening is a weekend of discovery. The next Happening will be #101 at Honey Creek September 14-16, 2018, and is open to those in grades 10 - 12.
Katie Grant from Good Shepherd, Augusta, is the Rector for the upcoming weekend.
 During a Happening weekend, participants worship, play, sing, and talk about God's place in their lives. They make new friends who share similar concerns and questions - a reassuring discovery. A teenager who acts as "rector" leads the weekend with the help of a staff consisting mostly of young people. Some staff members give challenging talks, after which there's time for discussion and activity. Together, the staff and participants share in an exploration of the impact of Christian faith in their daily lives. Happeners who attend a weekend for their first time are called "Candidates." To be a Candidate, one must:
- Have completed the 9th grade and have not begun college.

On October 4,
The Beecken Center of the School of Theology at the University of the South will host a a one-day workshop to enhance the capacity of participants (spiritual directors, laypersons, and/or clergy of any denomination or none) to discuss issues of faith and sexuality. The goal is no to convince one another to adopt any view but rather offer a safe and sacred space to share knowledge, and to engage in open and honest dialogue.
Dr. Westina Matthews, a member of St. Peter's Savannah and Adjunct Professor at General Theological Seminary will teach the workshop together with the Rev. Dr. Tommie Watkins, Jr., the Associate Rector and Associate Chaplain at Canterbury Chapel, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
