Summer Sun and Sizzling Squash!

Last chance to enter! Doug Hawkes (Jun 21-22)

This is the 5th annual Cedar Hill Summer Tournament Event. We wanted to make it something special and different and thought it would be good to give the Juniors their opportunity to run an event. They are in charge and giving back to all the people that have helped them through the years. Draws of 8 people based on squash BC rankings. 1 match Friday and 2 matches on Saturday. Saturday afternoon there is a BBQ outside court 4 on the grass area put on by the club.

Doug Hawkes was a devoted player, tournament organizer and passionate advocate for Squash development in Victoria from 1960 through to the 1980's. During that time, Doug mentored a number of local Junior players and it was fitting after his death in 2005 at the age of 82, that a fund benefitting Junior Development at his home club be established in Doug's name.

Net Proceeds of this event will be used to help perpetuate the Doug Hawkes fund for the benefit of aspiring young Squash players at Cedar Hill.

The cost to play is $30.00  --

Reminder about sports accident insurance claims
A quick reminder to our Squash BC members - if you are injured when training for or playing in a Squash BC sanctioned event, you need to submit an Allsport Accident Claim Form within 30 days of the date of the injury to our Insurer, Markel Canada Limited, in order to have potential future costs covered by this insurance.

In many cases, you may think that an injury will subside over time or that your main medical coverage (through your employer for example) will handle the costs, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Costs for MRI's, dental work and such can add up and the supplemental sport accident insurance is there to help in such instances.

For more information about our insurance coverages provided through your Squash BC membership, check out our website here.

Congratulations!

Congratulations are in order for
Emilio Carrillo who made it onto Team Canada competing in the Pan American Junior Squash Championships (Toronto, ON, June 16-22).

This year's team is exploding with tremendous talent.  Alongside Emilio on the Boys Team are Douglas Kosciukiewicz (NS), Neel Ismail (ON, Nikhil Ismail (ON).  Canadian Girls include Ontarians: Brianna Jefferson, Charlotte Orcutt, Erica Mcgillicuddy and Molly Chadwick.

BC talent will also be on display in the 2019 Music International Junior Showcase, a companion event where some of Canada's top U17ers will challenge the first-round losers from the Main Boys and Girls Individual draws.  Competing in this event are Jordan King and Aaron Lakhani.

Well done! Go Canada!

2020 Fund hits $100,000 Milestone

2020 Fund Quick Fact

Did you know the 2020 Fund will continue past the year 2020? The initial goal of the 2020 Fund was to reach $202,020 by the year 2020 (hence the name), at which point a portion of the income from the endowment could be used to support junior squash.  This financial target was reached in June 2010 and since that date the Fund has distributed over $100,000 to support junior squash development in BC!

The 2020 Fund is an ongoing success due to continued generous donations by individuals and organizations and will definitely continue to support the growth of squash well beyond next year!

Thank you to all of you who have supported the 2020 Fund over the years!

Junior Pathway

Squash BC has partnered with our member club coaches and pros to develop, implement and support a vibrant Junior Pathways Development Program that encourages kids to take up the sport, helps them develop their skills and progressively introduces them to competition.

With financial support from the 2020 Fund, the program is a cornerstone to engaging, growing and maintaining a strong base of junior athletes.

Progressive Events Promote Positive Play!

Ian Sefton from the Cedar Hill Squash Club reported:

"An eager group of juniors came out to Cedar Hill on June 8th to have some quality fun while playing in this summer's instalment of Squash BC's junior progressive event! The children were split into groups at first to play some king and queen of the court to gauge their ability.

We then we settled down to an awesome pizza lunch courtesy of Hot House Pizza and everyone got a Gatorade too!   For the remainder of the afternoon we had a mini-tournament and showed the kids how to ref and encouraged great sportsmanship habits.'

Across the waterway, River Club held a progressive tournament on June 16.  Shakiru Matti reported:

"It was very fun and memorable event for the players and parents from different clubs.  A brief referee clinic was held to refresh participants understanding of calling lets, stroke situations and above all the importance of safety . Competitors played lots of matches and refereed.

We had juice boxes, grapes, bananas and Pizzas."

Many thanks to the 2020 Fund, Ian Sefton, Cedar Hill, the Shakiru Matti Squash Academy and River Club for holding these events.
-------------------------------------------
The 2020 Fund was established in 2000 by Squash BC to help protect the future of squash in British Columbia. As funding from government and other sources becomes less predictable, it is important to find alternative ways to ensure a sound financial future for the sport of squash. The income accumulated through the 2020 Fund is used to promote the growth of the game through the development of junior squash. By establishing a vibrant and well-financed junior program, Squash BC will take a major step toward a successful future for the sport in this province. To donate to the 2020 Fund, click here.
