Stage 2: Plans for Resuming In-Person Gatherings
As California begins to enter Stage 2 of its stay-at-home guidance, a number of county public health authorities have begun to modify shelter-at-home orders and relax restrictions. Informed by California public health, county public health departments, and UC practices, UC Cooperative Extension has developed safety standards for resuming in-person 4-H gatherings, meetings, and activities, once a county public health department has moved to stage 2. From the 4-H Office & 4-H Council
|
|
Hello! For anyone who does not know me, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Sara Glashan. I am a proud 4-H parent and volunteer, and I am excited to be working with each of you in my latest volunteer role, Sonoma County 4-H Council President. We have had the amazing benefit of Naomi's volunteer service as President for the last 3 years and now, with her new adventure moving across the country, it is my pleasure to transition into the role. I have served at the county level for several years, first as a Member at Large, then as Council Secretary, and in the last three years have been your Vice President of Programs. I am a co-community club leader for Sequoia 4-H Club where my children have thrived for the last 11+ years, and I have lead or co-lead several projects in our club including both the dairy and market goat projects. Partnering with our youth, I have been involved in so many awesome projects including Poultry, Swine, Outdoor Adventure, Marine Biology, Rabbits, Cavies, Presentation Skills, Arts and Crafts, Record Books, Food Preservation and more including being the 4-H Camp Nurse a few times. I had the pleasure of being the Sonoma County Presentation Day chairperson for several years, and have served on the I&R Committee as well, even chairing that committee for a time. Outside of 4-H I am a Registered Nurse of over 20 years; currently I work in Home Health, but I have worked in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, rehab facilities, infertility clinics, correctional nursing and pediatrics.
I know that we are moving through new and confusing times in our world, and I want to acknowledge the challenges as well as the learning opportunities that have come with these experiences. We are all in it together, and if we can each remember to offer kindness and compassion each day to one another, I do believe we will come out on the other side of it all with new perspectives. Here in Sonoma County, (and I imagine all over the world) we have embraced our new best friend, ZOOM meetings! I'm sure many have had a long history with ZOOM, but admit that it has been a new learning curve in my life. I am so appreciative, though, that we have been able to use ZOOM for project and club meetings, Council meetings, school, and even family parties! ZOOM has offered us the welcome sight of our club and project members' smiles and allowed us to interact together, bringing a small sense of normalcy and maintaining the amazing and positive relationship between adult partners and 4-H youth members. Remember, the office staff can help any club or project set up a secure ZOOM meeting platform for your use. It's such an awesome tool.
I also want to take a moment to thank the Sonoma Marin Fair for working tirelessly to offer a virtual fair opportunity for your youth and adult communities; I hope lots of our members will be utilizing the opportunity to show off your hard work in livestock, small animal, and creative still designs using that platform. I know the entry deadline has passed, but I hope to see lots of entries and participation. I can't say enough how appreciative we are to the staff and board at SMF for their amazing support. In addition, I want to also thank the Sonoma County Fair for finding a way to keep the JLA going this year, despite the overwhelming challenges it may face to do so. I know everything looks different, feels different, and is different. We have all felt the sting of missing fairs, shows, the Chicken Que (in person) and I just want to say that we ARE Sonoma County Strong and I am amazed every day at our resilience, perseverance and community for doing whatever we can to keep moving forward together, despite so many obstacles. We are all "learning by doing" each and every day.
I love this program. I love seeing the amazing things our youth members are capable of accomplishing, and despite the heartbreak, I love that even in these trying times, 4-H continues to make the best better. Please know that your entire CCC Executive Board are here for you, contact us with questions or concerns, or just to introduce yourself. I may not have the answer you are looking for, but I can certainly help steer you to the right place to find it. I'm excited for the coming year, and I thank you all for your incredible dedication and volunteerism. We wouldn't have a program without each and every one of you.
Wishing Naomi and her family a safe and adventurous journey, and thanking her again for her service here in Sonoma County,
Sara Glashan

Dear California 4-H Community,
The recent killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Tony McDade, Sean Reed, and Breonna Taylor have left our community and nation shaken. Witnessing the ongoing discrimination, bigotry, violence, racism, and injustice inflicted on people of color across our country has filled us with pain, despair, anguish, and hopelessness. As a community that engages youth in reaching their fullest potential, I urge all of you to contemplate the role 4-H plays in helping create a more just and equitable society for all youth, and to create space within your 4-H meetings for youth and families to discuss their feelings about these tragic deaths and the anger they may be feeling. To incorporate moments of silence in remembrance of Tony McDade and Sean Reed, and acknowledge the ongoing trauma that is a reality for people of color like George Floyd who have died by violence from people in positions of power.
Now more than ever, the 4-H program must intentionally act to continue our efforts around eliminating barriers to participation, expanding the relevance of our program, and creating safe and welcoming environments for all youth and their families.
We must also show unity and acknowledge the racism, racial profiling, brutality, and injustice tackling place in our world.
While the challenge before us is daunting, we have the capacity, resources, and responsibility to change the future.
By ensuring the 4-H Youth Development Program promotes:
Competence
to work collaboratively with others for the larger good.
Confidence
to develop self-efficacy for meaningful contributions.
Character
for one’s conduct and obligations.
Caring
and a sense of sympathy and empathy for others.
Connection
through safety and structure, including protection from injury and loss.
Contribution
by being involved as active participants and decision our communities, we can be an example for inclusive, welcoming and safe programming for youth and families.

We're Going Virtual for Vision
2020 State Leadership Conference
July 24-26, 2020
While we had hoped that
State Leadership Conference
would be able to be held this summer to continue the tradition of teaching Leadership skills with a hands-on experience, it’s become clear the impact of COVID-19 will continue to be felt for the foreseeable future and that large gatherings should not be held. Based on the advice of health experts and the continued guidance issued by the Governor and University of California leadership, we have decided to move State Leadership Conference to a virtual format. The health and safety of our 4-H members and volunteers are our number one priority.
The State Ambassadors and the members of State Leadership Conference planning team are working diligently to create an engaging and interactive online experience. Schedule and registration will be announced within the next few weeks.
Thank you for your support!

In this environment of broken routines and uncertainty, chances are you - and those around you - are experiencing big feelings.
Stress and coping are frequent topics of discussion as work life, home life, and social life collide, expand, and contract.
Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations and we are all in need of tools, new and old, to improve our resilience.
After all, taking care of yourself, your family, and your friends can help you cope with stress and can make your community stronger.
The speakers focus our attention on taking care of ourselves and each other. You’ll learn about the therapeutic benefits of gardening, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and personal resilience. Whether you are a University of California employee or a volunteer, creating an oasis during challenging times could be the most important task of all.

Hello 4-H community,
I’m looking for 2 baby/young goats and 2 lambs. Particularly interested in Boer or Nubian goats and any breed of “self shearing” sheep such as Romanov. I would love to support the 4H on this, perhaps some kids might like to know their babies are going to nice home. They’d be at a lovely property in Nicasio. If you are interested in selling your animals please email MJ,
