National Gun Violence Awareness Day - BUSPH Activist Lab
Friday, June 1st 1:00pm Talbot Green
To participate in National Gun Violence Awareness Day, the Activist Lab is organizing our annual BUMC #wearorange group photo on Friday, June 1, at 1 pm on Talbot Green. It would be great if folks from GH could be there. Dean Galea has confirmed that he will participate.
Why orange?
- On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, a high school student from the south side of Chicago, marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after, Hadiya’s childhood friends commemorated her life by wearing orange. They chose the color because hunters wear orange in the woods to protect themselves and others.
- On June 2, 2015—what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday—a broad-based coalition asked people nationwide to join in what Hadiya’s friends started, honoring her life, the lives of the more than 90 Americans killed by gun violence plus the hundreds more who are injured every day, by wearing orangeWe wear orange to demand to be seen and demand to see change.

GH811 Applied Research Methods
Students in
Andrew Stokes’s GH811 Applied Research Methods course gave final presentations for Spring 2018 semester on May 8th. The studies designed by the 23 students examined different aspects of
stress, awareness of mental health and stress reduction resources, use of social media, and school policies related to sexual and gender minority students. Other presentations considered
students’ willingness to get the flu vaccine, and perceptions and activities related to the opioid epidemic.
Many GH faculty and staff attended the presentations, which reviewed the hypotheses, methods, data analysis, results, and implications of the mixed-methods studies. Student groups have plans to present their study findings to other audiences as well, including health system administrators and the office of graduate student life. It was a great application of our department’s teaching philosophy to learn through practice. Kudos to
Andrew and
Katie Berry, the Teaching Assistant for the course, for designing such an applied learning experience for students.
