NEWS FROM ST. MARY'S

A community of Christian worship, well-being, and service.

Dear St. Mary's Family,

Welcoming people has been part of St. Mary's ministry that has been amplified lately. We have been preaching, making changes that allow easier access to ministry opportunities, flying a rainbow flag, and many other subtle and obvious ways that we are being clear to everyone that passes this property: Stop in, get to know us, enjoy this beautiful property.

As fabulous as we all are and as beautiful as our buildings and property are, we know most of that is just a teaser. We are really inviting people into a transforming life with God, or to deepen that relationship with the help of this community. In fact, this is a place where we encounter the One who even has the power to help us overcome our demons: Jesus.

In the gospel this weekend, there is a dramatic story of demons that torment a specific person and a community. What the story really highlights for us is that communities have always felt the need to determine who is in and who is out. This may have made sense in a tribal culture, but it does not make sense in a place where Jesus is present. Wherever Jesus is present, all are welcome. Those on the margins are welcomed in and barriers--even demons--are removed.

The man in the gospel was healed from his spiritual struggle and God's love prevailed as it always has and always will. But the man went throughout the city, "proclaiming all that Jesus had done for him."

In over 175 years that Episcopalians have been gathering here to praise God and live in community, what has Jesus done? As a member here, how has Jesus helped you overcome your own demons? I believe those are the most important stories we have to tell and I believe telling them is the most powerful tool we have to welcome more people into God's transforming love. I will share some ways to do that in my sermon.

I hope you'll be at church this weekend. We will be welcoming many new members at both services, giving them a blessing, and receiving the blessing of new vision and ideas from these people whom God has called to be holy along with us.

Peace to you,

Gabe

Collect for the Second Sunday After Pentecost:

O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your lovingkindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

-COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS-

This Saturday, 7pm at the Rectory
New Members will also be blessed at all services this weekend

Recently, many, many organizations, especially churches have been the targets of fraudulent emails.

They often appear to be from the rector or a staff member. They usually ask for money or personal information.

If an email looks suspicious before you open it, trust your instinct and DO NOT open it.

If you are unsure, DO NOT open it.

If you do open an email and it appears to be asking for money or personal information, DO NOT REPLY and DO NOT send money.

Jennifer and the SMC staff and leaders will NEVER ask you for money directly via email.

You can always call or send an email to us if you are not sure. We are aware of the problem and this is part of the technology age in which we live and there is very little that can be done to stop this annoyance, but we should be mindful when opening and replying to emails always.
