A message from the Executive Director
Happy summer from Just-A-Start!

We've welcomed the warmer weather and longer days as we continue to celebrate Just-A-Start's 50th anniversary with community members, neighbors, and friends. Cambridge is a lively city year-round, but there are so many special opportunities in the summer to connect with our communities and enjoy the vibrancy and diversity of the city. In the coming months we're looking forward to our annual Resident BBQ and Family Fun Day, as well as a public event to socialize and learn more about JAS's real estate projects.

Just-A-Start's anniversary is all about celebrating connections - bringing together the people who have been part of JAS's first fifty years alongside the new friends who will be with us into the next fifty. Whether you have been part of our community for a long time or have joined us recently, we hope to welcome you in person this year at one of our events. The second half of our anniversary year includes something for everyone, from walking tours and ribbon cuttings to a community festival and a gala. We'll continue to share upcoming events in future emails, so please keep your eye on your inbox and save the dates!

Summer is a wonderful time to reflect and reinvigorate, and you'll find both at JAS right now. From the students working hard in their classrooms and labs to the real estate professionals building new housing in the community, everyone at Just-A-Start remains dedicated to creating more opportunity in Cambridge. We hope you'll join us!

Sincerely,
Deborah Ruhe
Executive Director

YouthBuild at the State House

On May 23rd, JAS YouthBuild students landscaped the grounds of the Massachusetts State House alongside other members in the Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition. Students offered their volunteer service as a way to thank public officials for their support of YouthBuild! By planting flowerbeds, mulching, and pruning trees, students had the opportunity to care for a public landmark, demonstrate their commitment to the community, and raise awareness of YouthBuild. Great work, students!

At the 22nd annual Cambridge Preservation Awards, JAS received special recognition from the Cambridge Historical Commission for fifty years of Just-A-Start, as several of JAS's properties have received preservation awards over their history. At the city's Volunteer Awards Ceremony, JAS's Board Chair, Peter Munkenbeck, was also honored with the Mayor's Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service for his dedication to the organization. JAS is grateful for the continued collaboration with the city that makes JAS's work possible each and every day!
