High School Highlights
"Find Your Voice"
What does it mean to "Find Your Voice"? Read what these two Summit Academy High School students have to say:
Welcome to the 1st edition of High School Highlights; a weekly wrap-up of events, designed especially for high school parents and students at Summit Academy, to help keep you in the know! We have had a great first two days of school and are all starting to get back in the swing of things. Thank you for getting your kids here on time each morning prepared for the day. Students in all four grade levels have started out the year strong!
Teacher updates:

Mrs. Beach: Thank you for turning in your Parent Transition Questionnaires. I will begin calling to set up conferences with Senior parents to discuss these after Labor Day. Math: Students pre-tested and are being placed in books. Literacy: Short opinion essays on "Finding Your Voice" were completed. These young men and women are so wise! Economics: Creating mock small businesses. Biology: Researching/creating Animoto slideshows on an area of interest in Biology.

Ms. Finn: Don't forget to take a peek at my web page!

Ms. Hoagland: In Math, we've been discussing the visual and verbal comparison of objects, such as a housecat compared to an African lion and how our class hands compare in centimeters. In Literacy, we have begun "popcorn reading" (ask your child to explain) and we are beginning journal work. In Health, we have had a wonderful discussion on the importance of physical, mental and emotional health. We have suggested ways to keep ourselves healthy in all of these categories. In Practical Living, we have watched a video on living on our own after high school and are beginning to set up a schedule for tasks involving life skills at the Sierra House and planning events involving the exchange of money. In Physical Science, we have measured our hands and different objects in the classroom using the metric system. We are beginning to investigate inventions in both chemistry and physics. Have a nice weekend.

Ms. Miller: Please make sure your student has a calculator and headphones with them. These are needed for a variety of classes throughout the day. Students have been given a copy of the Chromebook Responsibilities Contract. This needs to be signed and returned by 8/24/18.

***Student Planners are on back order. Students will be writing assignments in individual class folders until they are received.***

On next week's calendar:
  • Five full days of school next week :)
  • Wednesday - 7:30 a.m. Prayer Walk around the outside of the school followed by donuts in the high school for any interested student, parent or teacher. Thank you to Ashley, Alex and Emily for helping to organize!

Student Spotlight
Alex, a Senior at Summit Academy High School, is a role model in many ways. Although he stands over 6' tall, he treats everyone he meets with a gentle smile and a kind word. Most recently, he was awarded Employee of the Month TWICE at his job at Walmart, where he has worked for the last year. Congratulations Alex, and thank you for providing great leadership here at Summit!
Have a great weekend and, as always, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help!
