Applying to medical school can be a long process but thanks to a mentoring program with the School of Medicine, pre-med students in Biomedical Graduate Education programs don't have to go through it alone.

A popular selectives course led by Christopher Spevak, MD, JD, MPH, professor of clinical anesthesiology, gives medical students valuable insights into the complex issues surrounding the opioid epidemic.

Since its founding, the Georgetown University Postdoctoral Association has established and maintained a much-needed community and infrastructure for postdoctoral fellows spread across fields such as oncology, neurology, pharmacology and neuroscience.

With support from NIH T32 training grants, the tumor biology and neural injury and plasticity programs at Georgetown University Medical Center educate future biomedical researchers with a focus on mentoring to help them achieve their goals.
 




Dr. Healton Extends a Warm Welcome
This past week, Edward B. Healton, MD, MPH, executive vice president for health sciences at Georgetown University Medical Center and executive dean at Georgetown University School of Medicine, shared his "welcome back" message with our community. Retirement of Sheila Zimmet
After many years of service across numerous roles at Georgetown University, Sheila Zimmet, BSN, JD, senior associate vice president for regulatory affairs, has retired effective this month. What is creativity, and can it be enhanced - safely - in a person who needs a boost of imagination? In a newly published article in Creativity Research Journal, Georgetown experts debate the growing use of electrical devices that stimulate brain tissue to improve various forms of creative cognition.

Use of probiotics is linked to reduced need for antibiotic treatment in infants and children, according to a review of studies that probed the benefits of probiotics published by an international team that included Daniel Merenstein, MD, a professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

A new study published by a team led by Georgetown University Medical Center researchers finds that despite expectations following the Affordable Care Act (ACA)'s Medicaid expansion, there was no increased use of complex surgical procedures at high volume hospitals among ethnic/racial minorities and low-income populations.

 




Georgetown psychology professors Anna Johnson and Deborah Phillips will lead one of the most comprehensive contemporary longitudinal studies of public pre-kindergarten outcomes, using a five-year, $2.7 million grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study will examine the processes that support self-regulatory skills for children kindergarten through fourth-grade.
