Ms. Dibble and Peter the Panther join in the fun of
the 3-legged race at Friday afternoon's Back To Zoo BBQ
BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS

We were thrilled to offer the Breaking Down the Walls Program to our Panther Family this past week. Breaking Down the Walls focused on giving our students the invaluable opportunity to get to know other students on our campus. On Monday, our entire school attended the Breaking Down the Walls assembly. Then on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, a smaller group of students participated in meaningful and intentional games, activities, and important conversations, all of which were facilitated by the extraordinary Breaking Down the Walls team. I am confident the participating students realized just how connected they actually are, and that there are MANY members of our school community who they can turn to. A big thank you to ASB and PLUS Leadership for organizing this important week. Also thank you to ASB for paying for the program and the cost of lunch for the student participants.

Facilitator Dean Whellams used stories, humor, and probing questions to learn how our students interact with their peers and teachers on a daily basis

Three rigorous all-day workshops were held at which students built a common sense of purpose to increase the compassion and respect on our campus

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
We had an excellent parent turnout at our Back to School Night last Thursday evening. Thank you to Associate Principal Michael Wanmer for organizing the evening with the help of Link Crew, the PTSA, the Athletic Booster Club, CCC and office staffs, and of course, our wonderful teachers and counselors. As always, special thanks to our custodial staff and grounds keepers for all their efforts in maintaining our campus.

Thank you to our leadership students who helped the parents find their way

BACK TO ZOO BBQ

This past Friday, Link Crew hosted its 5th annual Back to Zoo BBQ for all freshmen. Our newest Panthers enjoyed good food, music, and exciting games and activities, with PVPHS's dedicated Link Crew Leaders facilitating all of the fun. Thanks to the JV Song and Cheer teams for performing at the event and to Don Frazier and Earl Kwak for being our grill masters. Peter the Panther also deserves a shout out for braving the heat to hang out with us! In addition, Link Crew Leaders Nic Scalfaro, Joanne Kim, Momo Sasaki, Ryan Burgos, Toni Foard, Joey Skefich, Lauren Rosa, Kristin Hanaoka, Charley Kim, Warren Bergman, Gracie Edler, Holden Dahlerbruch, and Ryan Umbrell all deserve special recognition for going above and beyond both before and on the day of the event to make sure everything ran smoothly. PVPHS Link Crew has many more festive events planned throughout the rest of the year...stay tuned, freshmen and transfers!

Freshmen enjoyed pizza, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, and snow cones

Talented Link Crew leaders applied intricate Henna paint tattoos

Link Crew students built their own version of the classic Dunk Tank

The 3-legged race was very popular
The 3-legged race was very competitive

Link Crew leaders played Spikeball with the freshmen

The day had perfect weather for a game of volleyball

The goal of this game is to place your marker as far forward on the Velcro strip as possible before the bungee cord attached to your vest pulls you back

First one to the bottom of the slide wins!

PENINSULA HIGH LITERARY MAGAZINE HONORED
Congratulations are in order for Beard Full of Butterflies, the PVPHS literary magazine, for achieving first place in the American Scholastic Press for last year's literary magazine. The students worked very hard to create an amazing showcase featuring a variety of our students' writing, photography and drawings. Here is what ASPA shared about our magazine:
"Beard Full of Butterflies is an excellent publication which deserves a FIRST PLACE award in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual magazine competition. Creating a magazine teaches students the fundamentals of creative writing, publishing, good writing skills, proofreading, editing skills, concepts of design and composition, and promotes and supports a community of young writers and gives them esteem. Your magazine shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, layout/graphic designers, staff members and adviser. ASPA congratulates you on your First Place Award!"

Also, congratulations are in order for Mr. Adam Lazarus and Miss Mei Johnson for being recognized for having creative and distinct cover art! Kudos to the 2017-2018 editors Adam Lazarus, Isabelle Mallwitz, and Jasmine Omidsalar!

DOC'S CORNER
The following is another in a series of  weekly columns from guest writer, Dr. Moe Gelbart, Executive Director of the Thelma McMillen Center.

PARENTAL STRATEGIES FOR HELPING TEENS IN TODAY'S PRESSURE COOKER: PART I - MODELING
After writing about some of the concerns and dangers of drug and alcohol use, I am going to focus the next few columns on things parents can do to help teens improve self-esteem, and to hopefully make the right choices in regards to drugs and alcohol, as well as many of the pressures they have to deal with.

Illustration by Peter C. Espina - Global Times

Our first Parental Strategy is Modeling. It is much more important to demonstrate healthy, and appropriate behavior ourselves, than just verbalizing concerns. Teens will learn more from what you DO, than from what you SAY. On the obvious side, if you experience a drug or alcohol issue, then your children will not only suffer, but will also see that as an acceptable coping strategy. Telling them not to use drugs or alcohol when they observe a problem in your behavior will often fall on deaf ears. They are, however, more subtle behaviors which children observe, and which influences their choices. If alcohol is a big part of your life, ie, parties at home, celebrations punctuated by drinking, or a regular daily drink to relax and stress out, the message will be sent that alcohol is a important part of life, and it will be difficult to convince your teens otherwise. Of course, alcohol is a good, normal part of most adult lives, but I am just cautioning to be cognizant of the emphasis we place on it. This is even more important when our children are experiencing challenges or problems. When teens enter our treatment program, for example, we encourage parents to have an alcohol free home both to model healthy behavior and to remove threats and risks from the home. Another subtle form of modeling involves what I call "better living through chemistry". We should pay close attention to our own use of chemicals to help us get through life. Naturally, if you are under a physician's care, and are taking medication for issues, that is an essential and appropriate behavior. On the other hand, if you become reliant on medications to cope with day to day issues, in ways which are not prescribed, then you may be modeling behavior that could guide the young mind to seek relief from problems through pills. In general, it is very difficult to convince a teenager to stop something which is harmful for them, when they observe you engaging in that behavior. In the same vein, though, when we model healthy behaviors, they are watching and learning, more than they are listening. If we eat healthy, exercise, communicate effectively, openly, and empathetically, they will have the benefit of good role models and guides. Modeling good behavior is important in areas other than substance use. Teenage screen time is a major issue for parents (to be discussed in detail in later columns). Limiting our children's time with their cellphones is important, but showing them that we are not dependent on devices may be a more effective tool. I have worked with parents who initiate device free dinner time; device free hikes and outings, and who monitor their own smartphone use, all to the benefit of their teens. Hopefully, this will encourage you to think about your behavior and the effect it has on your teens.

Next week, I will discuss Setting Limits.

Remember, if you have issues you would like to see addressed, please email me at
[email protected] . Your inquiries will always remain anonymous.
