Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Message From The Pastor
Dear Friends,

This weekend, I am sharing a thought that was forwarded to me by a friend of mine. I thought it appropriate, since we are almost a year into the pandemic and have been dealing with pandemic related challenges that shattered the rhythm of life that was considered normal.

At the Royal Palace of Tehran in Iran, you can see one of the most beautiful mosaic works in the world. The ceilings and walls flash like diamonds with multifaceted reflections.

Originally, when the palace was designed, the architect specified huge sheets of mirrors on the walls. When the first shipment arrived from Paris, they found to their horror that the mirrors were shattered. The contractor threw them in the trash and brought the sad news to the architect. Amazingly, the architect ordered all of the broken pieces collected, then smashed them into tiny pieces and glued them to the walls to become a mosaic of silvery, shimmering, mirrored bits of glass.

Something broken can become beautiful! It's possible to turn your scars into stars. It's possible to be better because of brokenness. Never underestimate God's power to repair and restore.

Wishing you a happy and healthy week ahead,

Fr. Saju

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Job 7:1-4,6-7 • 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 • Mark 1:29-39

“All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.” —1 Cor. 9:23
Do WHAT for the sake of the gospel? In today’s scripture verse, we are called to do EVERYTHING for the glory of God. The Gospel tells of Jesus’ life and how he tried to please God with all he did and said, the way he loved, the way he treated others, the way he did everything! We too are called to do everything in our lives to live out the Gospel. The word “gospel” means “good news.” We want to have a share of this Good News, just like St. Paul did. All we have to do is live the Gospel in our own lives. So, listen carefully to the scripture readings at Mass. They will guide you to live for God!

Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to experience your Good News today and be with you in heaven someday! Please help us to learn what we need to do to have a share in that gift.

Reflection: What do you think it would be like to have a share of the Good News?

PEACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE
To Recognize and Explore Racial Equity Within Our Community

As we enter the month of February, we also enter the month when we celebrate Black History.  Although this history is filled with much to celebrate, it is also filled with much heartache as we become more aware of the hidden biases that have empowered some, and continues to do so, while oppressing others. With that in mind we invite you to join us on a Lenten journey to see how we can work toward creating a Beloved Community where all people, no matter the color of our skin, are treated equally, fairly and with respect.

Last Fall we ran a Virtual Zoom Book Study on “America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege and the Bridge to a New America” by Jim Wallis. Because of the success of that study, we will repeat it during Lent beginning on February 24th and continuing the following five Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Facilitators will guide you through this journey as we explore how our own personal attitudes, assumptions and choices might play a hand in creating hidden biases that lead to empowering some while oppressing others.

Please email Evelyn Ortiz at ortiz.ev22@gmail.com by Monday, February 15th to sign up for the Book Study. You will receive a Zoom meeting ID and password via email about a week before the first meeting. The book by Jim Wallis can be purchased new or used from a variety of vendors.  Use this link to learn more about the book:  https://youtu.be/LGbB792Zei8
