Director's Spotlight On... School Performance Indicators
Welcome back and a happy new year to you all! I hope you and your children are healthy and ready to start fresh and energized. I refer to these next couple of months (sort of ) jokingly as the “good months.” That is, these are the months where the learners are most focused (fewer distractions) and we get some quality learning time in.

Speaking of learning…Just before we left for Winter Break, the California Department of Education (CDE) publicly released the 2018 – 2019 School Dashboard (and additional) reports. The Dashboard contains reports that provide the performance of local educational agencies (LEAs), schools, and student groups on a set of state and local measures. The intention of these reports is to help schools identify strengths, challenges, and areas in need of improvement. The general site can be reached here.

I do want to call your attention to a helpful page that explains the CA school accountability program: https://www.caschooldashboard.org/about/accountability This page is a bit of a road map that links the different types of information that is available. It also provides an FAQ link, resources, and a glossary to help translate the edu-speak. You can also search this site to see how our school did in 2018–19 and compare that to previous years. You can search results for other public schools in the district, county, and state to compare to SCC’s performance.

The CDE has added a variety of other reports this year that can be found here. On this page you can search SCC and select a variety of reports that can take you on some fairly deep dives of the data. I found the report that allows you to see charter school performance by county particularly helpful.

I realize that folks may have a lot of questions about the different measures and what the data really tell us about how our kids are progressing. It is not something that lends itself to a newsletter article. So, I am going to host an interactive evening where we explore the different reports and discuss what the results might mean. It is not a presentation where I present graphs and numbers, rather a workshop to share the tools that are available to parents and the school.

Please mark your calendar for a CA Dashboard Workshop: January 16, 2020, from 7:00pm – 8:15pm (or so…). Location TBD and bring a computer ☺

Remember to save the date! True to the original Footloose story about a Chicago teen who discovers that dancing is outlawed in the small town he's just moved to, Getting to Know FOOTLOOSE is a shorter, family-friendly version of the original hit movie. You'll enjoy all the popular dance tunes, including "Let's Hear It for the Boy," the hit Footloose theme, "Holding Out for a Hero," and "Almost Paradise." The annual school district musical is always a sell-out, and everyone loves the exhilarating music and dancing in Footloose, so reserve your seats early.

Appreciations
  • The 3/4 educators would like to thank our hardworking PRT reps and many classroom volunteers who donated their time, resources, and delicious food dishes for our first-ever Solstice Supper. The event was so special and a huge success, and we could not have done it without the many hands who contributed. We appreciate you!
  • The 3/4 team would like to thank the Round 2 Seminar leaders for their efforts in educating our learners on a variety of interesting topics over the 5 weeks before break, such as ziplining, paper crafts, and Scratch. An extra big "thank you" goes to our music leaders, who worked hard with the children across this first half of the year in ukelele, recorder, chorus, and drumming. We are so impressed with their performances at the SCC Winter Celebration - they only had 11 weeks to pull it off and we are so proud!
  • Many thanks to Sarah Fama for her huge support of the Room 122 service project!
  • Thank you to Karen Kaufman, Melanie Roth, Roberta Marks, and Heather Saffren-Bloom for organizing the hot cocoa and hot apple cider for the 5/6 classroom celebration. Thank you to Nan Iyer and Ana Navarro for volunteering to help provide the hot water.
  • Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who supported special activities on the Friday before winter break. Learners enjoyed a wonderful morning with holiday games, potlucks, and classroom celebrations.
  • Thank you to Gwynne Rinker for making cider available in the office in the mornings during the week before winter break. It was so thoughtful and such a nice comforting way to start the day!
  • Thank you to everyone who helped set up, coordinate acts and clean up after the Winter Celebration. It was so amazing to have this community event again!
  • Thank you to Jen Berman for coordinating the food drive and to all the families who donated cans of food for local families in need!
  • Thank you to the BOD for organizing and hosting all the Executive Director search information sessions for our parent community.
