SCC adopted families in need from
Options for Community Living, Inc. by participating in the Holiday Adopt-A-Family Program. Options is an organization that meets the needs of low income residents of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with mental illness, HIV/AIDS and other chronic health conditions.
The Holiday Adopt-A-Family Program is a powerful way to give and a wonderful way to come together to remember the true meaning of the holidays - giving back and helping others. The SCC staff truly enjoyed making this holiday season special for families in need.

SCC QUARTERLY PROJECT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PAC) MEETING
SCC held its quarterly Project Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting on December 12, 2019. The morning's program began with an update from the Family Service League on
 the Diagnostic, Assessment and Stabilization Hub (DASH) that opened March 2019. DASH
is a comprehensive service that provides crisis care for Suffolk residents who
struggle with mental health and substance use disorders. Care is provided
at a free-standing, community based site at the Hauppauge Industrial Park, serving children (ages 5 and up), adolescents and adults.
Jeff Steignman, Psy.D., Chief Administrative and Innovation Officer, Christian Racine, Ph.D., Senior Director of Clinics and Melissa Coscia, LCSW, Director of Clinical Crisis and Stabilization Services summarized the DASH Center activity since its opening, shared success stories and their goals for the future.
Carol Cassell, Executive, Director, Recovery Health Solutions IPA and Robert Detor, Chief Executive Officer, Advanced Health Network IPA spoke about their comprehensive behavioral health provider network and their efforts to build integrated patient centered care and service models addressing medical, behavioral and social needs and connecting
providers, payers and community to improve access and engagement.
The day concluded with presentations from SCC staff members on the impact of the Chronic Disease Program, INTERACT Program and Workforce.
We thank Alexandra Kranidis, Project Manager, SCC, for moderating the meeting and thank all of the speakers that shared their knowledge with us.

UNDERSTANDING BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER AND INCREASING EFFECTIVENESS IN YOUR WORK
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness will be holding a workshop entitled
Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder and Increasing Effectiveness in Your Work.
This workshop will focus on the defining features of borderline personality disorder and other similar disorders that are characterized by pervasive emotional dysregulation. Validation strategies and skills to build strong working relationships will be emphasized. This workshop will also increase participants' understanding of working with individuals who often present in crisis.

Long Island Addiction Resource Center (LI-ARC), a program of HUGS, Inc., in partnership with F.I.S.T., provides easy-to-use digital access to information about providers of education, treatment and recovery services in Nassau & Suffolk counties. This bi-county collaborative effort is aimed at all populations, including community members and addiction disorder field professionals. The goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and increase awareness about valuable resources.

HANDS ACROSS LONG ISLAND 
Hands Across Long Island (HALI) was
formed in 1988 as a grassroots, multi-service organization managed and operated by, and for, psychiatric survivors. Today, they are a large, successful peer-run, multi-service mental health organization, helping over 3,500 people each year. They serve those 18 years of age and older. Below are some of the services they provide:
Community Wellness and Recovery Center
Classes, presentations, activities and special events that promote health and personal wellness.
HALI Mobile Shower Unit
The unit enables homeless individuals to access a hot shower and free clean clothing and food as available within the townships of Babylon, Islip, Huntington, Riverhead and Brookhaven.
HALI Cafe Soup Kitchen
Soup served on Fridays from 11:00 am-12:30 pm - computer access with FREE Wi-Fi, movies, food, hot showers, coffee and snacks throughout the day.
Housing
Supported Housing provided to individuals in Nassau & Suffolk Counties. In addition to providing a rental subsidy, HALI case managers provide regular visits with the tenants to assist them with a multitude of activities from daily living skills, to employment. The housing is available through Single Point of Access
(SPA) referrals for individuals with mental illness who are able to live independently while maintaining their recovery activities.
Advocacy
This program complements traditional mental health treatment programs for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness. It is intended to promote consumers' rights and access to mental health, health, social services, residential and other support service programs.
Self-Help
HALI's self-help, mutual support groups offer emotional support and practical help with an experience, challenge or concern that is common to all members.
Food Farmacy
The Food Farmacy is a NEW pilot program developed to help individuals struggling with co-occurring health issues, who can benefit from comprehensive physical and dietetic evaluations.

AVAILABLE FUNDING TO IMPROVE MANAGEMENT OF OPIOIDS AND OPIOID USE DISORDER IN OLDER ADULTS
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is seeking applications from researchers to develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate strategies to improve the management of opioid use, misuse and opioid use disorder (OUD) in older adults in primary care, including those in diverse populations. While many initiatives have been developed to curb the opioids crisis, few have targeted the growing toll among older adults. Between 2010 and 2015, the rate of opioid-related inpatient stays and emergency department visits increased for people 65 years old or older by 34 percent and 74 percent, respectively. AHRQ anticipates investing up to $7.5 million over three years for three research projects based on evidence-based interventions and quality improvement strategies. Applications are due February 20, 2020, by 5 p.m. More information may be accessed here.

NATIONAL GLAUCOMA AWARENESS
January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease. Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision and blindness in the United States. CERVICAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
Cervical Health Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about how women can protect themselves from HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer. NYS FISCAL INTERMEDIARIES FOR THE CONSUMER DIRECTED PERSONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The NYS Department of Health (the Department), has issued Request for Offers (RFO) #20039: New York State Fiscal Intermediaries for the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program.
The Department is seeking offers from qualified entities to enter into contract to provide Fiscal Intermediary (FI) services under the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP).
