Marquette Catholic High School announced a groundbreaking move Friday that will permanently alter the campus landscape and provide one local family with the assistance required to prosper.
Marquette has agreed to donate its lot on Ohio and 9th Street - the former site of Flanigan Garage - to Habitat for Humanity, and will provide aid for a project that will culminate with the construction of a new home. Marquette students will assist in the construction as part of the school's largest community service project to date.
"Community service is at the heart of our mission at Marquette Catholic. We are committed to improving the lives of those in our local communities, and this partnership will enable us to make a positive impact in our immediate neighborhood," Marquette president James White said.
The LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity has built 52 homes in LaPorte, Kingsbury, and Michigan City since 1986.
With construction expected to be completed next spring, Marquette will begin searching for a family to inhabit the home soon.
