IDDSI Implementation around the world
Out of South Africa

IDDSI has been officially recognized for use in South Africa by the South African Speech Language Hearing Association (SASLHA) and the Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA).

Into Germany

The German Interdisciplinary Society for Dysphagia https://www.dg-dysphagie.de  announces their support for IDDSI and will be hosting an IDDSI workshop at their 2020 Annual Conference in Würzburg on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
On to Austria

Logopaedie Austria has published a position paper outlining their support IDDSI.  The paper outlined that their decision came through information gained from national and international experts, representatives of industry, colleagues from other disciplines and through informal surveys among the members. The findings lead to the decision to support the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) in terms of patient safety by June 2019. The paper can be found at: https://www.logopaedieaustria.at/images/Dokumente/Positionspapier_IDDSI_25092019.pdf
Off to England

Chefs at a Nursing Home in St. Leonards on Sea, UK have come up with creative and appealing meals that meet the IDDSI framework standards and are being positively received by residents and their families.  This was achieved through strong team work and increasing their learning at a chef’s training day supported by Nutricia. To read more about their creative achievement, check out the story on the Resources section – country specific resources under UK, or click here.
American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM)

An instructional session on IDDSI implementation was given at the AACPDM conference held in Anaheim, California September 18-21, 2019.

A key aspect of the workshop was for participants to practice the IDDSI testing methods so they can take these back to their own facilities to share with colleagues.

According to one participant, the workshop was very timely as their facility was getting started and she was thrilled to be able to go back with testing information and the IDDSI resources. Appreciation to our IDDSI sponsors Nestles, BD, Kent Precision Foods, Parapharmatech and Simply Thick for providing supplies to carry out testing.
VIII Congreso Panameño de Nutrición Clínica y Metabolismo
I Congreso Panameño de Nutrición Clínica Pediátrica, V Congreso de la Región Norte de FELANPE (FELANPE 2019)

Many thanks to the scientific and organizing committee of FELANPE 2019 for featuring IDDSI in the conference opening keynote presentation in Panama City, Panama.  With the amazing support of FELANPE 2019 and Medtrition, IDDSI Silver Sponsor, a very well attended IDDSI Happy Hour provided attendees the opportunity to compete for prizes while practicing the IDDSI Flow Test and IDDSI Food Texture Tests.  Great learning and fun were had by all!
IMPORTANT: Safety Notification

A safety notification has been circulated regarding the interaction between Polyethylene Glycol (PEG 3350) laxative and starch based thickener. Addition of PEG to a starch based thickened drink will result in a thin, watery consistency – effectively undoing the intended thickening effect of the drink.  For those with dysphagia requiring thickened fluids due to an inability to safely swallow thin fluids, this could result in aspiration.  This interaction does not apparently occur with xanthan gum thickeners.
