63rd Street Construction- Keep watch for updates
The Iowa Department of Transportation will be completing a resurfacing project on 63 rd Street between University and Hickman with a start date sometime between September 10 and October 13, 2018. This project will result in 63 rd Street being closed to through traffic during the project. Once the project starts, the contract requires the project to be completed within 10-days (excluding weekends). The Iowa DOT has included Windsor Heights City Staff on planning meetings and they will notify the City of their actual start date at least 10-days prior to the start of the project. Once that notification has been made, City staff will push information out through various channels so Windsor Heights residents are aware of the closure. This closure will also affect Cowles Elementary, and no doubt the traffic in the area. Public Safety Staff have met with Cowles Elementary to ensure the most efficient traffic control during the process. Residents are reminded this should only be a 10-day project and while we understand the frustrations that accompanies road construction, planning should help minimize the impact on residents.
70th Street- Keep watch for updates
The Contractor will be completing concrete street patching and repair on 70th Street between Colby Avenue and Hickman Road in the coming weeks. The roadway will be closed during this time. Further updates to follow.
Windsor Heights Dog Park Closed
The Windsor Heights Dog Park is still closed until the fence repair can be made. The contractor said it should be repaired starting the week of August 20, 2018. Please keep watch for updates.
R.A.D. Women's Self-Defense Course
The Windsor Heights Police Department is hosting a Women's Self-Defense class for area residents who may be interested in participating in a women's education and self-defense course called Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.). Dates of the course have been set for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in October (October 19, 21, 26 and 28) from 6:00-9:30 p.m. at the Windsor Heights Community and Event Center. Class size will be limited to 20 students and attendance at all classes is recommended to complete the program successfully. There will be a one-time registration fee of $25 due prior to the first class along with pre-event paperwork and waivers. Returning students are welcome at no charge. The R.A.D. program for women's basic self-defense is the largest nationally recognized women's self-defense organization in the world (www.rad-systems.com). Classes encompass twelve hours of education and awareness topics mixed in with hands-on, active self-defense techniques and strategies. The final class in the series is a compilation of the material presented where three separate, active simulation scenarios are given to students to apply what they have learned in the classroom. Participation in this course does encourage a moderate level of activity; however, women of all ages and abilities are encouraged to attend. The philosophy of R.A.D. instructors is that this program should be easy to learn, easy to retain, and relatively easy to employ during real confrontational situations. Interested women, high school age and above, may contact Det. Woods at the Windsor Heights Police Department during normal business hours at 515-645-6829 or [email protected] with questions.
