Sermon
"Can There Be a Peace-filled Passing?"

This Sunday
This Sunday we continue in the study of death and dying. This time it will center on how to create a peace-filled passing. There are things we can do that bring comfort to our families, help create our personal legacies, and assist in being remembered. One way to offer that is by video. In one of my past memorial services, I was able to experience the life of a dad being interviewed by a daughter. As he spoke, it was as though I knew him. It changed the whole feeling of the service, and it allowed others to share their experiences with this beautiful man. We all leave a legacy and I 'll spend some time talking about that. It will be centered on the scripture about the death of Moses. It is a rich description of how a person might be remembered. In the passage Moses is standing before God. They are on Mt. Moab, just east of the Jordan River valley.   The passage describes his age, the mourning, the transition of authority, and ultimately a eulogy that would help every following generation remember why Moses is so venerated. The eulogy is short. The eulogy is powerful. So the Sunday we'll explore legacy, a peace-filled passing that allows for a descriptive eulogy. To prepare please read Deuteronomy 34:1 - 12.

Worship Team Reminder
August 19 @ 12:00pm
The Worship Team will meet on Sunday, August 19, at noon to discuss fall worship themes and make plans for both services for the coming months. All are welcome!
September 2 Worship @ 10:00am
On Labor Day Weekend, weather permitting, we will worship together at  10:00am in the open air courtyard on the lower level of the church. As we move from the August sermon series into fall programming, we'll gather as one body around the theme of Opening to the Spirit's Movement. We'll celebrate communion together in combined worship with elements from both first service and second service. We'll have some chairs but seating will be flexible if you prefer to use a camp chair or blanket. This will also be the day we offer back to school blessings for students, teachers, and backpacks. Then after worship, we will have the opportunity to stay and have lunch together. Plan to join us for this all church event!  If you can help with setup, potluck or clean-up please sign up or contact Pastor Laura.

What to bring:
  • your school bag if you have one
  • a camp chair or picnic blanket if you have one

Staff Vacations - Office Closed
Due to staff vacations there will be times when only volunteers man the church office or the office is closed this summer. It is a good idea to call ahead to see if the church is open before you come. The church office will be closed on Monday, September 3 due to the Labor Day holiday.

S lide Help Needed
Moving in to the fall, Pastor Laura would like to work with a few other people on designing and organizing the slides for first service worship. The process usually only takes 1-2 hours a week and is a lot of fun for creative, technology-oriented people. Please see Pastor Laura if you are interested, willing to learn the process, and can help as part of a team with this important work for the church.
Budget Update
The Core Leaders Team (CLT) approved a balanced budget of $463,613.21 for the July 1, 2018 -  June 30, 2019 fiscal year. The details are still being finalized. In order to balance the budget, the CLT was forced to cut some maintenance and other needed services. We hope these cuts will be temporary and, through your stewardship, can be restored this fiscal year. Please prayerfully consider your past and future giving. Check your giving records - send in your pledges. We ask that everyone consider giving a "13th month" - designate it as such and allow us to significantly shorten the temporary cutback in services. Thank You for your faithfulness!
