ANNOUNCEMENTS |

Funeral Service for Morgan Hoover's stepmother, Clare Hoover will be held tomorrow, Friday, August 17 at 11 am at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle Street, NW, Washington, DC.
This Sunday, we welcome the Rev. Ted Johnson as celebrant and preacher while Fr. David is away
. During our summer services we will be using Morning Prayer with Eucharist. The text is taken from Enriching Our Worship, volume 1.
Plan to help us after this Sunday's service as we clean out our space and surroundings in preparation for a new program year.
School Supplies - How to Contribute -
School is important. Beginning the new school year with a new backpack full of new supplies helps a child feel ready to tackle new challenges. One way we can help is through the partnership we already have with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless. You are encouraged to learn specifics either directly through their website or through the link on Good Shepherd's website. You will find the latter when you click OUR MISSION and look under Campus Kitchens or Sandwich Team. The deadline for getting school supplies to the Gude Drive location is Monday, August 20. Needs are clearly listed on the MCCH website. If you wish to contribute, but don't know how you can deliver to Gude Drive by August 20, please bring your supplies to church this Sunday, August 19. Thank you.
Good Shepherd Church
will be hiring a Nursery attendant to work on Sundays from 9 am to 12:30 pm. We need someone who is child care certified and CPR trained. If you are aware of someone interested please have them call the church office 301-593-3282.
Thanks to Susan Callahan and Her Student Leaders
For the 4th year, on August 11, Susan opened her professional kitchen at UMES Shady Grove to 20 volunteers from Good Shepherd. Under the guidance of Susan and her student leaders, we prepared over 250 meals destined for the residents of the Gude Drive Men's Shelter and the Wells-Roberson House (transitional housing) in Gaithersburg, which is supported by Susan's Campus Kitchens program. Think shrimp and chicken jambalaya, corn on the cob, salad, buttered biscuits, and peach cobbler. Yummy!!
Hunger in Wealthy Montgomery County? Unfortunately, YES. -
That is why we at Good Shepherd faithfully bring in staples each week for the Saint Luke (Lutheran Church) Food Pantry. Our staples help relieve food insecurity for individuals and families. Let us remember that hunger does not take a vacation. This is a good time to fill up the receiving cabinets at the back of church. Let's focus this week on canned tuna, chicken, chili, pasta meals, fruit, beans (black, kidney), and rice, but ALL nutritious staples are welcomed.
Wednesday Eucharistic services will reconvene after Labor Day.
Saint Luke Food Pantry - Saint Luke Food Pantry Summer Exercise - Great way to stay in shape! Pump the iron by carrying a bag or two of staples as you walk from your car to the Saint Luke Food Pantry bin at the back of the sanctuary. This works on weekdays as well as Sundays. If you miss a week or two, you can double up when you return. If your staples are lightweight, dance around the church five times with them before placing them in the bin. Think nutritious and easy to prepare, especially for the children who are missing out on free and reduced breakfasts and lunches at school over summer break.
Good Shepherd's Golden Oldies Recipes -
Celebrating our 50th year at Shrine Mont in Orkney Springs VA, we are creating a book favorite recipes from the past. Do you have a memorable recipe from the past you would like to include? We will accept all recipes preferably home made from scratch. Photos are welcome and a short origin story. We plan to have these fun memories available by Christmas. Proceeds will be contributed to Good Shepherd Shrine Mont scholarship fund. Please send 1 recipe per household. Submissions are to be in Word format no later than WORD 2010. Email as an attachment to [email protected]. Deadline for submission November 1. Questions? Ask Nell Jeter 301-593-9027.
Cleanliness is Next to Godliness -
This statement is NOT in the Bible and may even be heretical, BUT what we're focusing your attention on here are those individual unused soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions that you may have brought back from your vacation. They are perfect for the clients of Shepherd's Table who take advantage of the shower facilities. Bring them in! There is a container at the back of church to receive them.
Wednesday Eucharistic services will reconvene after Labor Day.
Good Shepherd Preschool -
The preschool has openings in its 2, 3, and 4 year old classes for the Fall. If you have friends or neighbors with preschool children please tell them about our excellent program! Our program runs 2, 3, 4, or 5 days per week (depending on the age of the child) from
9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
You may contact Mary Lureau at home during the summer (301) 927-2076 or weekday mornings at the preschool after
August 26th
(301) 593-2308.
