Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

Ellen Petree is being recognized for her exemplary service to Barrow County as a new member of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR Campaign) Council of Champions.

Ellen is co-founder and current Co-Chair of the Barrow Book Partnership (BBP). The BBP is a unique, dual-approach community partnership formed to promote and encourage early literacy in Barrow County's children from newborn to age five. The group is comprised of the following community partners: the Barrow County School System, Piedmont Regional Library System including Auburn, Statham, and Winder libraries, Barrow County Health Department, Barrow Family Connection, Adult Literacy Barrow, Lanier Tech, The Winder Clothes Closet-Thrift Store's Book Room, the Barrow Community Foundation Inc., etc. According to Bel Outwater, Auburn Library Manager, "Ellen has been the driving force behind raising funds to extend and enhance the program. She has organized book drives, recruited volunteers, and dedicated herself to giving the 0-5 population in Barrow County a fighting chance at future success in school and in life. She is a fierce champion of literacy and libraries and a warrior for our missions of open access to information and services."

                               Dogpack Legacy

Russell Middle School achieved the National Beta Legacy Award this year. Russell has maintained the National Beta legacy for 25 years. "This prestigious honor is a true indication of Russell Middle School's commitment to academic excellence, character, leadership and service" says Principal Paul Defoor. "Offering National Beta to RMS 7th and 8th grade students provides them with leadership development and service opportunities which strengthen and build their future."

Food2Kids Kickoff

The Winder Barrow Community Theatre Inc. is once again a leader in the community awareness and fundraising campaign for Barrow County School System's Food 2 Kids program. Each year WBCT dedicates a portion of a play to help students served by the Food2Kids program, who have been identified as struggling with food insecurity on the weekends. The July play of Beauty and the Beast Jr. raised $1183.00 for BCSS Food 2 Kids. Dr. McMichael remarked, "We appreciate the strong support of the Barrow community for our students in need, and especially the Winder Barrow Community Theatre for kicking-off the 2018-19 Food 2 Kids community awareness campaign. The compassion and generosity of this community is unparalleled."
