WHY DUKE MEMORIAL
Stories of Faith and Hope
Balcony, center section, third row, right side… DeBerry’s have been sitting here for over 50 years. A short time in the life of our church, but three generations in our family. We have been choosing Duke Memorial for decades.
But why?

My parents chose Duke Memorial because it was large, vibrant, and provided the adult and children’s programming our family needed. They were rewarded each week by their adult Sunday School class, which often was so simulating that it ran over into worship at 10:55.
Barbara and I chose Duke Memorial because it reminded her of her church home in Asheville, and had such a strong and vibrant children’s program. One of my greatest joys was dropping my daughters off at Mary Canada’s classroom, just as I had been dropped there 40 years before!
Today we chose Duke Memorial because it remains a “church for the masses,” welcoming a wide, exciting and diverse congregation.

I don’t always agree with the route our church takes, I don’t always agree with what is said in the pulpit, I don’t always agree with the projects which our congregation undertakes. I do agree to be part of the discussion, remain loyal to the principles of Christianity and our church, and make a difference. I challenge you to do the same.

Tad DeBerry.
Why Duke Memorial: Stories of Faith and Hope is an ongoing series that features Duke Memorial members answering the questions of why they came, why they stay, and where they see God at work in our community. Stories are shared with permission in the Weekly and Sunday Bulletin.

A Note from Cyril Murphy, Minister of Music

Dear Duke Memorial, I am excited to share with you that soon you may see me with a child - for years I have desired to serve as a foster parent. Earlier this year, Methodist Home for Children accepted me into their midst and this fall I completed their certification classes. I share this with you because it is important to have a strong supportive community and gratefully, YOU, my church family are a part of that. As many of you know parenting is no easy task, especially not for those who come from more vulnerable circumstances. So as I look to provide love, hope, justice, and security for a young person in our world I have some requests. First, join me in prayer for this new journey and for the over 12,000 children and 7,000 foster homes in our area alone! Next, a more thoughtful ask - when they arrive be cautious of your language, specifically, rather than calling them a “foster kid” ask and call them by name. And, if you’re interested in helping in more tangible ways please reach out directly. I am excited for them to feel your welcoming embrace and I’m just as grateful to learn and grow together during this next phase of life.

With Love and Thanks - Cyril Murphy

Sweet Singer | Trinity UMC
On Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Durham, the character of Charles Wesley will appear in “Sweet Singer," a one-person musical drama dealing with his struggle against poverty, reluctant acceptance of life as a clergyman, opposition to slavery, courage in the face of violence, and poetic genius. Charles Wesley, the brother of John Wesley who co-founded Methodism, has been called the Sweet Singer of Methodism, writing over 9,000 hymns; 51 are found in the current Methodist hymnal.

The drama will be performed by S.T. Kimbrough, Jr. who strives to present Wesley’s hymns in the context of his life. Kimbrough has had a career as musician, author, scholar of Charles Wesley, and clergyman, and as Associate General Secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

The show begins at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, most easily accessible from the breezeway on the left side of the Sanctuary. Trinity is located at 215 N. Church Street in downtown Durham. Parking is available across the street in the municipal and to the left side of the church in Trinity’s parking lot.
