First Friday Art Walk for August at the library celebrates the opening release of "The Art of Natural Bainbridge" featuring the artwork of Cameron Snow and Paul Brians, published by our Bainbridge Island Land Trust. Opening reception on August 2, 5-7PM in the meeting room at Bainbridge Public Library will offer books for sale, as well as some of the artwork from the book.
Natural Bainbridge
is a newly released book, published by the Bainbridge Island Land Trust, which focuses on protecting, sustaining, and appreciating our island's natural character and special preserved places. The book is the work of a small team of longtime Land Trust supporters - including Paul Brians and Cameron Snow - all of whom volunteered their unique and diverse professional skills for the book. Natural Bainbridge will be available for sale at the First Friday reception on Friday August 2 from 5 to 7 pm and at Eagle Harbor books on Winslow Way and through their website at eagleharborbooks.com.
Paul Brians is a retired WSU English professor who, since moving to Bainbridge a decade ago, has done extensive photography for the Bainbridge Island Land Trust and other environmentally oriented organizations, and appears in many Land Trust publications.
Cameron Snow is a professional painter, videographer, and ceramic artist who settled on the island 20 years ago. She was particularly drawn to the new native plants and animals that greeted her. Her closely observed and exquisitely detailed work has appeared at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

A New Library Sound System!
While 2018 was a terrific year to enjoy the results of the recently completed BPL "Refresh" project, it was not a good year for the 20-year-old Meeting Room Audio System. Our microphones (mics) progressed from being problematic to not working. Also, partially due to increased meeting room usage resulting from the Refresh, other upgrades were requested by KRL staff. Unsurprisingly, technology changes didn't allow us to simply replace the mics so the BPL Board decided to upgrade the entire system to use more modern, digital technologies.
Users will primarily notice all new mics, a simplified interface (digital wall panel), and new speakers which extend the audio range past the retractable glass wall if/when needed for larger functions. Less noticeable features include additional input sources, volume control across multiple mics, feedback elimination, and sound control options for events such as live music and theater.

The Body in the Castle Well

The body of a young woman is found in a well near the village of St Denis in the Périgord region of France. She's the daughter of a wealthy American couple with ties to the White House who was completing her thesis with an aging local art collector. He is a former Resistance fighter with a penchant for Renaissance art of dubious provenance. Enter Bruno, Chief of Police, who must solve the case with utmost discretion, lest it become an international incident. And, of course, solve it he does, while cooking Navarin of lamb, riding his horse Hector, romancing the lovely Pamela, and giving the reader manageable doses of Napoleonic history laced with the finest local wines. This latest in the Bruno, Chief of Police series is a feast for all the senses. As fans of Bruno expect, it is full of gorgeous countryside, eccentric characters, and wonderful meals whipped up with flair in Bruno's farmhouse kitchen.

Have You Seen This Library?
J.K. Rowling crashed a library book group meeting at this public library in March, 2016! It is the Orkney Public Library in Kirkwall. The current building opened in 2003 but Orkney has had a public library since 1683 when local William Baikie bequeathed his 150 volume library to the citizens of Orkney. It was a subscription library until 1890 when an Andrew Carnegie donation enabled the library to become public. Carnegie then donated funds once more in 1903 for a dedicated library building.

Friends of the Library Book Sales
|
The Bainbridge Island Friends of the Library book sales offer gently used books,
CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and magazines to support the Friends, who in turn reinvest in the library through endowment gifts, programming and special events, magazine subscriptions, the aquarium in the Children's Library and much more.
Daily, scores of donated books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and other items arrive in our book room. A crew of volunteers work three days a week to sort, price, organize, and shelve these donations for our sales. As a result, our stock of books and other items on display for sale is constantly renewed. Over a year's period, we receive several hundred thousand books and we are proud that we have only gently used, often new appearing books on our shelves.
