Planning Commission to hold public hearing on ADU, tiny house rules

The
Planning Commission will hold a public hearing during its Jan. 9 meeting on the proposed rules for accessory dwelling units (ADU), which include provisions for tiny houses.
The new regulations (Ordinance 2019-09) require common ownership of the primary residence and ADU, and remove the ADU from lot coverage calculations for properties less than 40,000 square feet.
If approved, the new regulations would also allow one tiny house, a dwelling that does not exceed 400 square feet, in lieu of one traditional-sized ADU (up to 900 square feet).
Tiny houses will need to meet the same requirements as ADUs for parking spaces, placement, and access. The municipal code requires one parking space be provided for an ADU in addition to one or two parking spaces required for the primary dwelling.
The City Council approved Ordinance 2019-09 during the
Oct. 22, 2019 business meeting. Once the Planning Commission completes its review and recommendation, then the ordinance will return to the Council for final approval.

City Council to discuss Suzuki project options
At the Nov. 19 study session, the Council agreed to schedule time at an upcoming business meeting to determine whether to evaluate new potential options for the project site plan. Some alternatives discussed included a smaller number of housing units and a different mix of affordable and market rate units. At a subsequent meeting, the Council agreed to delay additional discussion of this topic until the new Council members were seated in 2020.
At the Aug. 27, 2019 business meeting, the Council approved a site plan for the Suzuki project to include 100 housing units (60 rental units, 39 for sale units, and 1 manager unit).

Apply Now: BIPD Community Police Academy
Join the Bainbridge Island Police Department for a free, hands-on learning experience at the Community Police Academy. The 12-week program gives people access to information on how the police department functions. The intent of the program isn't to prepare people for a career in law enforcement, but simply to give folks a chance to see how public safety works and better understand the types of challenges officers face daily. Some of the topics covered include traffic enforcement, narcotics, investigations, criminal law, defensive tactics, and identity theft.
The Community Police Academy is offered once a year. Classes are held Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 and there is one Saturday session. The 2020 program runs from Feb. 5 to April 22. Students will get to visit the 911 dispatch center, the Kitsap County Coroner's Office, and the Kitsap County Jail.

Ferry schedule changes at Colman Dock begin this Saturday, Jan. 4
All trips between Colman Dock, Bainbridge Island and Bremerton will follow a
temporary sailing schedule
beginning Jan. 4, as construction to replace the state's seismically vulnerable flagship ferry terminal moves forward.
During the temporary sailing schedule, which will be in effect until Jan. 20, all Bainbridge Island and Bremerton sailings will operate out of a single slip, and some crossings may take longer to prevent more than one ferry from arriving or departing the slip at the same time. Most departure times will shift between five and 30 minutes, but sailings later in the evening may shift as much as one hour.

THANK YOU to our island community, including our volunteers, partners, and donors.
Here are some sample metrics of our team growth and what you helped us accomplish in 2019:
- Medical Reserve Corp (MRC): Our MRC team is now officially federally recognized, and has grown to 42 members (from 3 at the beginning of the year)
- Events: 38 educational events held
- Total Volunteers: 275 credentialed across 20+ teams
- Total 2019 Volunteer Hours: 3,700+
Thanks to everyone for the great success in 2019, and here's to even more progress in 2020!

Join Us: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration
Join the City of Bainbridge Island Race Equity Task Force, BISD Multicultural Advisory Council, and other community partners at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art on Sunday, Jan. 19 for an afternoon celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The program will feature art, poetry, performance, music, conversation, and words by members of the Suquamish Tribe and special guest
Michael "Quess?" Moore, a poet from New Orleans.

- 3-5 PM: Art activities for children
- 4-4:30 PM: Reception and live music in the BIMA Bistro
- 4:30-6 PM: Community celebration in the BIMA auditorium
In addition, there will be a March for Equity at 3 p.m. to honor and continue the justice marches of the Civil Rights Movement. Participants will march from the museum to the Winslow Green and then return to the museum for the reception and community celebration.
