Reflecting on the last two weeks has been painful and awakening. We grieve collectively with our communities in Kane County as we address the death of George Floyd, systemic racism, and the pain this has caused. We honor the importance of celebrating diversity while recognizing that there is much work to be done to improve conditions for our African-American students and families.
As a Regional Office of Education, we will continue to work collaboratively with our school districts to support their work with students. With a focus on equity, our students should have outstanding academic experiences and resources regardless of the neighborhood in which they live. We will continue to support professional development for our administrators and educators focused on diversity and equity. Through our participation in community organizations, our goal is to keep the focus on providing intentional leadership and active listening to promote unity and progress moving forward. Our work with the Illinois State Board of Education and members of the General Assembly will include advocacy for equitable programs and funding solutions for schools.
As we move forward, I am motivated by the life and words of Ruby Bridges as we forge into ensuring that the educational system for our students is fair, just, and equitable. She said,
"Don't follow the path. Go where there is no path and begin the trail. When you start a new trail equipped with courage, strength and conviction, the only thing that can stop you is you!"
Let us all join together on this new path.
