Demand Justice for Detained Immigrants

While NASW-NJ is relieved the Administration has reversed the harmful policy of separating migrant children from their parents, more needs to be done. We are still facing a growing humanitarian crisis on our southern border.

Many social workers have reached out to us, asking how they can help the children and rectify this terrible situation. Please refer to our website for information and updates on how you can get involved.

State Budget Battle Continues

Yesterday, the state legislature passed a budget bill that continues the Christie-era trend of austerity budgeting. NASW-NJ is extremely disappointed that the legislature has passed this budget rather than adopt the Governor's proposed budget which addresses the long-term financial needs of the state. The legislature's budget leaves much needed revenue on the table, while at the same time cutting an additional $75M from public transportation and $95M from Medicaid and Medicare.

Let your legislators know you oppose austerity budgeting and demand a budget that meets the needs of working families in our state.

Guidance on New Duty to Warn and Protect Requirements

Last week, Governor Murphy signed into law legislation that will require health care professionals, including social workers, to help keep firearms away from clients who may harm themselves or others. The legislation ( A1181 ) strengthens existing Duty to Warn or Protect law and requires clinicians to notify local police if a client makes a credible threat of violence, or is deemed to be a threat of violence, against themselves or others.

We've prepared a tip sheet to help social workers understand the new reporting requirements. The information is also available under the "Clinical SW" drop-down on our website.
