The CABE BEST Program:
First Year + First Cohort = First Evidence of Growth
by Dr. Ivannia Soto,
CABE Professional Development Specialist and BEST Program Director
The inaugural Bilingual Educator Strategic Training (BEST) teacher cohort, whose purpose was to prepare teachers with bilingual authorizations for Dual Immersion success, was launched in March 2018 and completed in July 2018, with 16 participants from across California.

The CABE BEST Program , through generous funding from the Sobrato Foundation , was designed as a cohort-study program that included key professional development, coaching and support, online learning experiences, and access to CABE professional development opportunities.

Participants completed both a pre-and post-dual immersion survey at the beginning and end of the program, as well as reflected on their learning at the end of the professional development experience. The results of both assessments were overwhelmingly positive. The survey, constructed by the authors of the text,  Teaching for Biliteracy , which participants studied over the course of the professional development series, included 21 items.
On all 21 items, participants demonstrated growth in all areas due to the strategic professional development provided. The greatest growth occurred for the items “ I feel most comfortable speaking and writing Spanish in academic situations ” and “ I understand [dual] language learners

It's a Banner Year for
Plaza Comunitaria in 2017-2018!

Expansion of the program is partially fueled by IME Becas (scholarships from the Instituto de los mexicanos en el exterior), and has resulted in an increase in the number of locations, students, and graduates. According to the CABE Final Report to IME...

"the transformation in the individual lives of each participant is moving and inspirational as we observe the impact of continuing education on each participant's life—from age 16 to over 70 years of age."

A Message for the CABE Network from the
I wanted to let CABE and its network know about some webinars that are coming up,  conducted in Spanish , for parents to learn how to use Britannica Escolar when working with their children on homework and other education/family projects. (Britannica Escolar is the Spanish-language version of Encyclopedia Britannica’s K-6 and middle school resources; entries are written in Spanish, not auto-translated.)

You’ll see the listings on this calendar here, near the end of the list (mid-late Sept): https://calendar.google.com/calendar/r?cid=Ym11MGdoNGRmNTBwOXBtZWZsdG9hbHZzcDBAZ3JvdXAuY2FsZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbQ

(I’m working on updating the description with the Spanish, as well as the English. But, please feel free to include this in your network.)
If this project from the State Library is new to you, please look here for more information about what’s being provided:

We hope you can share the information through your network.
