Take Care of Your Heart this Month

Every February, the American Heart Association promotes American Heart Month. offering information about heart disease, fitness, nutrition and other healthy lifestyle behaviors.
This year the Wellness Team is focusing on Men's Heart Health.
Check out this article about the five heart health mistakes that men often make from the professionals at John's Hopkins. They include:
  • Skipping Preventative Visits
  • Self-Medicating
  • Thinking your are too young for a Heart Attack
Remember that the CWRU Wellness Program offers support to help faculty and staff improve their heart health like Stress Management, Physical Activity and Nutrition programs.

February 5th also marks the annual Wear Red for Women Day. Since cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, this annual observance reminds us all to wear red this Friday and if possible to donate to the American Heart Association. Learn more about Wear Red Day!
Communicate with Other Caregivers Fridays this Month

Build your own caregiver toolkit with Impact Solutions presenter, Kelsey Loushin in a two part series, "Powerful Strategies for Caregivers." This program will be offered over Zoom on Fridays February 12th and 26th at Noon,
During the first session Kelsey will discuss balancing your own needs with needs of those you are caring for. Then during the second session you will be given tools to assess your individual situation so that you can build a strategy that works. Each session will start with a 30 minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes of discussion.

Improve your Personal Finances with Popular Series

Join Weatherhead faculty member Karen Braun for one of two, 8-week series designed to help faculty and staff improve their financial IQ.
Financial Wellness 101 will take place over Zoom on Wednesdays at Noon.
Financial Wellness 201 takes place over Zoom on Thursdays at 12:30 PM.
See the Wellness Website for weekly topics. The 101 class offers more basic topics like budgeting and saving for the future. Though the 101 class is not a pre-requisite for the 201 series, the 201 topics are a bit more specific including estate planning and health insurance.

Join Webinar to Build Your Gratitude Practice
Faculty and staff are welcome to "Finding Gratitude Through Difficult Times," a one time, one hour webinar on Wednesday, February 10.
During this session, gratitude professional Lisa Ryan will review best practices, share upbeat stories and allow time for practicing gratitude skills. Among the many positive effects of gratitude are: improved relationships at home and at work. decreased personal stress, and improved outlook.

After reviewing your fall 2020 survey feedback, we are excited to be planning a short Men's Health Series coming soon. We would like to focus on the topics that are of most interest to our male faculty and staff.
Please take one minute to complete this anonymous survey for the upcoming series.
More Mindful Movement Coming this Month
By popular demand, a second session of Mindful Movement is back on Fridays at Noon.
In Mindful Movement, participants are invited to link movement with breath if they find that useful. Basic seated, standing, and supine poses will be presented and variations on each pose will be offered to accommodate the uniqueness of each person's relationship with their body. Each week, the practice will conclude with a 10-minute period of meditation and relaxation, which will include options for people who prefer to continue with movement rather than stillness.
