Happy Labor Day from AIA Kentucky! Whether you are spending it shopping the sales, sitting by the pool or staying close to home, we hope that you are enjoying a day of rest. During some of your downtime today, we also hope you will kick back with our September newsletter and read about all of the good things ahead for AIA Kentucky this fall.

We'll be gathering in Columbus, IN for our annual convention later this month, so check out the article below for information on upcoming deadlines for hotel room blocks and registration.

We are also excited about our Awards Celebration coming up on October 18 and are busy making plans for our annual fall planning meeting in November. O n top of all of this, your local chapters also have some excellent programs and events planned. Read on to learn about all that is in store!

Countdown to Convention!
September 26-29 in Indianapolis & Columbus

There are less than four weeks until we kick off an annual convention unlike any other at the National Symposium, Design, Community, and Progressive Preservation. The speakers are set, tours and hotels are selling out, and you have just over two weeks left to confirm that you are joining us before advanced registration closes on September 19.

2018 Kentucky Construction Code Forum
September 30-October 2, 2018 in Louisville

The department of Housing, Buildings and Construction invites you to the 2018 Kentucky Construction Code Forum. The Forum is designed to encourage interactions between different sectors of Kentucky's construction industry. It will feature two days of content taught by leading experts in the construction industry and offer opportunities to broaden your professional network. 

Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST - 
FREE Webinars

This fall, Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST will be providing several webinars for those who cannot make it to their in-person trainings. FHA FIRST is an AIA registered Continuing Education provider, so architects will receive up to 1.5 AIA LU|HSW per webinar. The webinars will all be 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM EDT, with 5 minutes for opening remarks and 15 minutes devoted to a Q&A if time permits. The modules that will be referenced can be found here and the webinar dates and topics are as listed below:

Oct. 3 - Accessible Routes & Site Work (Modules 7 & 8, Requirement 1) - Register
Oct. 16 - Accessible Public & Common Use Areas (Module 8, Requirement 2) - Register
Oct. 31 - Dwelling Unit Requirements (Modules 5, 6, & 10, Requirements 3-7) - Register

2018 Excellence in Preservation Awards
Submission Deadline: September 13, 2018
 
Nominations are open for Preservation Kentucky's 2018 Excellence in Preservation Awards. Recipients will be honored at their Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony to be held at historic Undulata Farm in Shelby County on Saturday, October 27. Visit the Preservation Kentucky website for details on nomination requirements and categories.
 
Hanley Wood Design Awards
Submission Deadline: September 28, 2018
 
The Wood Products Council is looking for innovative building systems and techniques, as well as projects that showcase attributes of wood such as strength, beauty, versatility, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Nominations are now open- and there's no cost to submit! Visit the competition website for contest details and help celebrate excellence in wood design, engineering and construction across the US!
 
2017-18 Kitchen Design Contest
Submission Deadline: January 31, 2019
 
For over 20 years, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove have celebrated inspiring, innovative kitchen designs and their talented creators, through the Kitchen Design Contest. Entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of designers and architects and finalists will attend the Best of the Best Summit and Gala. Claim your place as one of the industry's best and submit your work today!

Employment & Achievements
The American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) announced in August that R. Wayne Estopinal, AIA has attained Fellowship status. Fellowship is granted to ACHA Board certified architects specializing in health care who have shown distinction in fulfilling an area of expertise as determined by the College's Council of Fellows. Firm News
Alt32 Architecture / Design announces the hiring of Lynsey Jordan as new Marketing Director & Office Administrator. Her academic experience at Georgetown College in Graphic Design and Art History, as well as her marketing and administration experience in various fields, will progress the firm's commitment to quality work product for clients.
Kody Morgan leaves her position at the firm as summer intern to attend the University of Louisville in the fall, in anticipation of attending Law School in the future. Best wishes, Kody.

CoD News

It is shaping up to be a busy and exciting fall semester at the UK College of Design. The students returned to campus last week with their contagious energy, and the Design Career Fair Committee is gearing up for the CoD's 2nd Annual Design Career Fair, which will be held in early spring.

In the meantime, the College is celebrating the recent approval of its unique Masters in Urban & Environmental Design (MUED) and will be accepting students into this new program beginning fall 2019.

Through their Community Re/Visions series, the CoD will kick start the MUED program with Land Grab: A Film Screening & Public Conversation on September 7 at KMAC in Louisville, KY. Immediately following the film screening, they will host one of the main figures in the film, John Hantz, for a moderated conversation along with guest Marshall Brown. Brown is an urbanist and principal of Marshall Brown Projects. He has also recently joined the School of Architecture at Princeton University as an Associate Professor and Director of their Center for Architecture, Urbanism, and Infrastructure. Read More.

Finally, the College of Design invites you to attend a Faculty Exhibition, running now until October 28 in the Community Gallery at the Lexington Downtown Arts Center. An official reception will be held Friday, Sept. 21 from 5-8 p.m. during the Gallery Hop.

The Last Word

Our amazing Executive Vice President is taking advantage of the Labor Day holiday to enjoy a much needed and well-deserved vacation. When she returns next week, we will be jumping headfirst into the final stages of preparation for an amazing week in Columbus, Indiana September 26-29. It is going to be a unique convention experience that you won't want to miss and we sincerely hope to see you all there.

In addition, we will be finalizing plans for our 2018 AIA KY Awards Celebration on Thursday, October 18. Please SAVE THIS DATE for a full day of very special programming where we will offer some exceptional CE presentations and celebrate the year's most significant achievements in architectural design and professional service.
