The Monday Memo is the weekly newsletter of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. It is sent to journalism faculty, staff, students and alumni who have requested it.

Faculty and staff
Professor Scott Reinardy participated in a New Beats Project roundtable titled "Job loss, precarity and work futures in journalism" at the University of Sydney on June 7. He was a member of a North American panel of media researchers who participate via Zoom.

Associate Professor Carol Holstead was one of the top 10 finalists on the Best of Lawrence, Teacher (Higher Education), list. See all of the finalists here.

Associate Professor Mike Williams was invited to be co-chair of the Kansas Board of Regents Transfer and Articulation Council for next year. He also has been selected to the board of directors for Trips for Kids, an organization that get kids involved with bicycling.
 
Lisa McLendon, Bremner Center coordinator, gave three presentations in June on fact-checking and fake news: one at KU Mini College on June 6, "Is That a Fact? Truth-Checking News and Information"; one at the Endacott Society Public Affairs Forum on June 11, "Fake News and the Need for Reliable Journalism"; and one as part of the How-To Festival at Lawrence Public Library on June 23, "How to Spot Fake News."

Scholarships and contests
BitIRA U is announcing a bi-annual scholarship, awarding $1,000 to one student. Submit a one-page (typed) , essay containing specific examples of how cryptocurrency or blockchain could change the world over the next 20 years. Learn more.  
 
The Healthy Products For You Disability Scholarship aims to encourage and support undergraduate and graduate students who have a disability. The HPFY Make a Difference Scholarship program recognizes the service of those who have used their good fortune and good health to give back to the community, either by caring for the less fortunate or doing their part to make this world a better place for everyone. The Tour of Britain 2018 is encouraging students to enter the Bicycle Scholarship Program, for awards of $1,500, $1,000 or $500. Students must submit a 1,000-word essay about cycling. Get the details here.   
 
Kumar Solutions, a digital marketing company specializing in SEO, is offering a $200 scholarship for the winner of an essay contest. Students must write a 900-word essay on "How digital marketing transforms business prospects globally." Get the details.

New blog features new graduates On the Job


"On the Job" is a new blog featuring the career paths of recent J-School graduates. These mini profiles are also featured on the digital display monitors around Stauffer-Flint. Read how our new grads got their jobs and what advice they have for students.
Brianne Pfannenstiel, 2011 J-School graduate, is now chief politics reporter at the Des Moines Register.

Shawn Schaller, 2012 J-School graduate, is test development specialist for PSI Services, LLC, in Olathe, Kansas.

Marissa Khalil, 2017 J-School graduate, is a production assistant for B 17 Entertainment in Los Angeles.
