New Community Policing Unit Meets With NETWorks and Tucker First Missions
|
|
Last week, our Wesley Center hosted a meeting between NETWorks Cooperative Ministries, Tucker First Missions, and our newly formed DeKalb Community Policing Unit. The purpose of the meeting was to make introductions and share resources. Per Stephanie Suggs, "This is a wonderful group of officers who are truly concerned about the most vulnerable people in our community.”

Homework Help - How You Can
Help At-Risk Children
|
|
Corners Outreach Homework Academy, one of the ministry partners of the Mission Committee’s Children First, provides after school tutoring and mentoring for struggling students at local elementary schools. The dedicated staff members there are committed to safely serving these students as the pandemic continues to disrupt their lives. This semester, a few ways that our congregation can help are:
- Volunteer to assist teachers, help with student check in and out, or test assessments between 3:30 - 6:30 pm, Mondays – Thursdays (day/time is volunteer’s choice)
- Donate cleaning supplies like disinfectant spray, paper towels, wipes
- Donate pre-packaged individual snacks (popcorn, bars, cheese-its)
- Donate a gently used vacuum cleaner (two needed)
- Volunteer as a digital reading buddy (volunteers read with a student for thirty minutes each week over Zoom)
The Corners Academy is located at 5139 Jimmy Carter Blvd, Suite 201 in Norcross. If you are interested in helping with one of these action items, please contact Robin Pounds, robinpounds631@gmail.com, 404-918-0069.

Help Wellroot Spread the Joy of Easter
|
|
Easter is an exciting time as we celebrate that Christ has Risen! Children start the day full of joy as they receive their Easter baskets and go on egg hunts. For children in foster care and children of at-risk families, the holidays can be a tough time. Help give children a chance of normalcy and experience the joy of waking up to a personalized Easter basket.
What goes into an Easter basket? Each basket contains:
- A new outfit or shoes
- A new toy or activity
- Easter egg dye kit
- Small chocolate bunny
- Basket wrapped in clear cellophane & tied with a ribbon or bow
You will receive child’s name, age, clothing size and interests in mid-February
Baskets are needed before March 18.
If you or your group are interested in providing an Easter basket for a Wellroot foster child, please contact Robin Pounds, robinpounds631@gmail.com, 404-918-0069.

The North Georgia Housing and Homeless Council provide capital and operational grants to organizations throughout the North Georgia Conference who are serving our brothers and sisters in need.
By contributing to the homeless offering, you are directly supporting ministries and agencies serving those experiencing homelessness and poverty in communities across our state. These organizations might include housing programs, food pantries and other feeding programs, Habitat for Humanity houses, and many other programs in communities large and small. 100% of the Homeless Offering goes to ministries serving persons experiencing poverty.
Through your faith promise giving, our missions committee has already contributed to this special offering. You may give an additional offering on Sunday, February 21 if you so desire.

Urgent Need for Shelter Volunteers
Tucker First is in desperate need of men and women to serve as overnight volunteers.
|
|
Our cold weather shelter, which operates out of our Activities Center, is in desperate need of additional men and women volunteers for overnight volunteers. We have had a great need for the shelter in December and January and our volunteer numbers are getting thin.
Due to the pandemic, several of our regular volunteers are unable to serve.
|
|
If you frequent the Magnolia Room Cafeteria, please remember to say thank you to the employees and management for their support of our Cold Weather Shelter. They provide food free of charge on nights when the shelter was open.

Thank You From Murphy-Harpst
|
|
From a thank you letter that came to Rev. Varner from Murphy-Harpst.
It is so inspiring when we receive a gift that enables us to support children in our community who have been affected by trauma and mistreatment. Your recent donation of $650 is important, and we are thankful.
Last year Murphy-Harpst embraced 200 children and teenagers on our campus. Each was provided their own room, cooked meals, clothing, personal items, and the clinical therapy they needed. Along the journey of healing, they developed meaningful friendships, celebrated birthdays and holidays, learned life-long skills, and discovered new talents.
Our hope is that we can continue to meet each child with the resources they need to not only reecover from abusive and neglectful circumstances, but to flourish into healthy, thriving members of society. Donors like you make this hope achievable.
May the new year bring you warmth, peace, and joyfulness!
Sincerely,
James Waddey
Vice President of Advancement

This month is Black History Month, and at Murphy-Harpst, they are celebrating the diversity of the children, the staff, and their founders! Murphy-Harpst has a rich, nearly 100-year history; and a great portion of their legacy is thanks to the hard work and dedication of Sarah Murphy. With her motto of "we'll make room;" Sarah Murphy's vision for Georgia's most vulnerable children continues to guide the organization every day.
