AUGUST 2018
From Bishop Barry

Our diocese's newest priest, the Rev. Lisa Biersch Cole, Bishop Barry, and Archdeacon Gary Brown, at Trinity, Sonoma, for Cole's ordination on Aug. 3.
Dear friends in Christ:

Grace and peace to you.

Foremost in my mind as I write this are the terrible fires still burning near Redding and Lakeport, all who have suffered loss, and all who now struggle, suffer, labor, hope, and endure in those places. Our prayers and support continue, and will continue as long as needed. I am especially grateful to all of you who have contributed to the Disaster Relief (formerly "Fire Relief") Fund of the Diocese.  Your compassion and generosity have enabled us to put necessary resources into the hands of those who need them most, in the most efficient and timely ways possible.

It already seems a long time ago, but General Convention is behind us, and the work of understanding and implementing its actions now begins.  In the coming months, we will be determine the best ways to do that work throughout this new triennium. Our Deputation will be reporting soon on much of this, and I will have more to say also; there are a few things I wish to touch on here, sooner rather than later.

For one, I want you to know that you have my permission to begin using the "expansive language" texts for Eucharistic Prayers A, B, and D made available to us by D078. Just please let me know if you intend to do so.

I have already begun to form a group that will help me oversee the experimentation diocesan bishops are asked to undertake as part of General Convention's commitment to revision of the Book of Common Prayer.

You can expect to see the Marriage section of our website revised and updated in the near future. In the meantime, you have permission for discretionary use of all authorized liturgies for marriage and blessing of relationships.

I will have much more to say about this soon, but know that the passage of A052-the re-admission of the Diocese of Cuba into the Episcopal Church-brings with it some special responsibility on our part. Their exclusion from CPF for the last 50 years has resulted in significant hardship. In order to help address this injustice I intend to ask that each congregation collect an amount equal to $1 for each member; that money will be presented as our offering at the opening Eucharist of Diocesan Convention.

Happily, my own B033 was adopted, albeit much amended. More about that in due course-along with much, much more, on a variety of topics.

I am most grateful to Canon Andrea, and to all our Deputation, along with many from Northern California who served as support staff. We were very well represented and very well served, and together made a significant contribution to the governance of our Church.

Thank you for your prayers, input, and engagement so far. General Convention was able to address issues that had the potential to divide us deeply; instead, by grace, we found common ground, based on common purpose and shared vision. We really are coming to see ourselves as "the Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement."  Please look for ways to help carry this work forward, in that same spirit, here in at home.

As we were reminded in Austin, "Movements move." Keep moving on, in the Name of Christ.

Faithfully,

Sustainable Development Goals Grants Available
At the 2016 Diocesan Convention we passed a resolution, following the lead of the United Nations and the Episcopal Church, that extends the commitment of using 0.7% of our budget for overseas development. The focus is on efforts to help people and or communities develop ways to become self sustaining. Among the 17 stated goals are those including comprehensive education, better farming techniques, relief of hunger and economic growth.

So far this year, your commission has responded to the emergency request from the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem for help for the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. The hospital was overwhelmed during the border skirmishes with Israel with injured of all ages and walks of life while access to equipment and supplies was curtailed. We have sent $1,000 out of this year's funds to support the life saving efforts of this hospital.

The remainder of our funds are available for projects that support one or more of the above goals for the development of locally sustainable projects. We are inviting our congregations to consider applying  for grants supporting projects or programs overseas that meet one or more of these goals. We are particularly interested in ways partnerships and projects are being developed in cooperation with and supporting local efforts.

Download the grant application; the deadline to apply is Sept. 20.

The committee, (Lucretia Jevne, Jane Snibbe, Dan Boeger, Elizabeth Potts) looks forward to hearing about your ideas for developing sustainable projects.
Retreats Offered in Auburn, St. Dorothy's Rest

On Sept. 21-23, two retreats will be offered in two different locations in our diocese:

A Men's Retreat  will be at Mercy Retreat Center in Auburn. Keynote speaker will be the Rev. Seth Kellerman, Rector of Emmanuel, Grass Valley, since 2009. Before being called home to Northern California, he served in churches in the Dallas, Texas area. Prior to embarking on full-time ministry, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army serving with 2nd Ranger Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. He served in Afghanistan, in Operation Enduring Freedom, as a machine gun team leader. Seth is passionate about missions, evangelism, spending time with the Lord, and seeing people grow in their love and faith in Jesus Christ. He enjoys spending time with his wife of 20 years, Tara, and their four very active daughters, coaching them in sports, and is always up for an adventure.

For more details on the retreat, contact the Rev. Stephen Shortes, deacon at Our Saviour, Placerville, at  [email protected] .

The Way of Love: The Spirituality of Therese of Lisieux  will be sponsored by the Sisters of the Transfiguration at St. Dorothy's Rest in Camp Meeker, near Occidental. The retreat will be conducted by the Rev. Suzanne Guthrie, noted author and spirtual guide who is an associate at St. Martin's, Davis, and also has been a visiting professor at Church Divinity School of the Pacific.

Listen to professionals address these issues and more on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Town and Country Lutheran Church, located at 4049 Marconi Ave.

Anti-Racism Training in Cupertino, Aug. 17-18

Talking about race in our culture, in our Church, in America, is one of the most difficult (and feared) conversations in our times and necessary to heal our world.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry said: "[The] Episcopal Church made a commitment to what I call the Jesus Movement and a commitment to following in the way of Jesus of Nazareth... which is the way of God's love in this world. And doing it by a way of evangelism and a way that leads to racial reconciliation in our society and in our world."

To create the skills for evangelism and conversation on race, the Diocese of California offers Healing Racism Training. This course is open to all and successful completion fulfill the anti-racism requirements for lay leaders and postulants to Holy Orders. The training will be Friday, Aug. 17 - Sat., Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, at St. Jude's, Cupertino.  Learn more and register here
