Catholic Services Appeal 2021
The 2021 Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) is underway. The CSA is the main source of support for 20 ministries of our local Church. Please visit the CSA website at csafspm.org for more information on the foundation and the ministries supported by the CSA. We will watch the Appeal video and make pledge cards available at the Masses this weekend. I encourage you to support this year’s Appeal that helps to serve the poor, support life and strengthen the faith.
Ash Wednesday – February 17
The Church celebrates the beginning of Lent this Wednesday, February 17, 2021. We will have Mass and distribution of ashes at 8:00AM and 5:00 PM and Prayer Services with the distribution of ashes at 12:00 PM and 6:30 PM. You must register online to attend one of these services. Please note that instead of imposing ashes on your forehead, ashes will be sprinkled on the crown of your head.
Support our Catholic School at Frassati
I encourage you to support the mission of our Catholic school by making a donation to the Frassati Fund. The purposes of the Frassati Fund are to keep tuition costs affordable, encourage teacher development, and offer additional tuition assistance to qualified families. Checks for the Frassati Fund should be made payable to Frassati Catholic Academy. You can make your gift online at frassati-wbl.org/make-a-gift.
You can also support our school by purchasing a raffle ticket for the Catholic United Financial School Raffle. From January 15 – February 28, you can purchase $5 tickets and the opportunity to win a 2021 Ford EcoSport (or $20,000 in cash), or other great prizes totaling $40,000 in value. Every penny of every ticket sold stays at Frassati Catholic Academy thanks to the Raffle’s sole sponsor, Catholic United Financial. Tickets can be purchased from a Frassati student or by visiting the school office at the Parish Life Center. The Grand Prize drawing ceremony will take place on March 11.
The Address of Pope Francis to Diplomats
On Monday, February 8, 2021, Pope Francis gave his annual address to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican. The Holy Father emphasized the importance of building a culture of fraternity and hope, a culture that recognizes the dignity of every life from conception to natural death, a culture that measures a person by their transcendent dignity as a person created in the image and likeness of God and never by their usefulness. The pope called on all governments to protect the most vulnerable, including immigrants and refugees, the young, and the poor. The pope asked: “If we deprive the weakest of the right to life, how can we effectively guarantee respect for every other right?” He described religious liberty as a fundamental human right that government must respect. Daily Masses
We have daily Mass in the church at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. There is no limit to the number of times you can attend daily Mass. Sign up is no longer necessary.

We have Mass in the church on Sundays at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Sign up is required as space is limited. These Masses are for those who are unable to attend Mass during the week.

Ash Wednesday
Outside of the United States, Catholics sprinkle ashes on the heads of the faithful rather than marking a cross on foreheads. Since current COVID restrictions do not allow skin contact, we will follow the practice of sprinkling ashes this year. Ash Wednesday is February 17. Signing up to attend is required. Lenten Observances
Abstinence – Catholics 14 years of age and older must abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting – Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these days one full meal is allowed. Food may be taken at two other times during the day, in order to maintain strength according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed, however.
Sacrament of Penance – All the faithful who have reached the age of reason (second grade) are bound faithfully to confess their grave sins at least once a year. Lent is a good time to fulfill this precept of the Church. Anyone who is aware of having committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion without previously having been to sacramental confession (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1457). Of course, frequent confession, even of venial sins, is highly recommended to grow in God’s grace (CCC, #1458).
Other Lenten Observances – Each weekday of Lent, with the exception of Solemnities, is also an obligatory day of penance and should be marked by prayer and increased devotion to spiritual practices. Some recommendations to fulfill this obligation include the participation in daily Mass, increased personal prayer time or spiritual study, self-imposed fasting or abstinence, works of charity, financial generosity to programs which benefit others, especially the poor, and participation in traditional Lenten Devotions (Stations of the Cross, Rosary, Retreats, etc.).

Stations of the Cross will be offered at 4:30 PM on Fridays throughout Lent, beginning on Friday, February 19.

Funerals are Private
In our ongoing efforts to keep parishioners as safe as possible during COVID-19, funerals at St. Mary’s will be private. Many families choose to have the funeral live streamed so that others can participate online.

Join a Small Group
St Mary of the Lake encourages all parishioners to be ON MISSION—knowing, following, and sharing Jesus-- by participating in the community life of the parish. SCC’s are a helpful way to grow in faith and support each other on the discipleship journey.
Lent 2021 is the perfect time to join a group! The focus this Lenten Season, Mending Our Hearts, sets our intention on reimagining community through the benevolent eyes of Jesus.
We have a few options for groups this Lenten season:
Mending Our Hearts - daily reflections, contemplations and prayers focused on healing body, spirit and community.
The Best Lent Ever - uses journaling, the book I Heard God Laugh, and videos to guide us through Lent.
At Home with the Word - follows the Sunday Gospel reading with reflections on the practices of Hope, Faith and Charity.
All these resources are free and can be used in families, as an individual, or in a small group setting.

Lenten Retreat
Lent is the Church’s annual nudge that reminds us to set aside time in our busy lives for prayer. This Lent Patrice Halbach and Kathryn Lien are leading an exploration of prayer through the lens of Jesuit spirituality. You are invited to this weekly virtual conversation to discover the many ways to pray.
Beginning the week of February 21 and continuing for seven weeks, you will receive an article on prayer from the treasury of America magazine. You can choose from either of two sessions offered each week, one on Mondays from 6:30-7:30 PM and one on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:00 AM. There are as many ways to pray as there are people who want to pray. Let us come together in our common desire to deepen our relationship with Jesus this Lenten season. Young Adult Ministry
St. Mary’s young adult ministry is a faith-filled community of Catholics ranging from 21-39 years old. Young adults from all walks of life are welcome, including singles, couples, married with or without kids, single parents, and any other status you can imagine.
Please consider joining the regular weekly small group meeting time on Thursdays at 7:30 – 8:30 PM via ZOOM. The small group focus this Lent will be on the “At Home with the Word” resource which will guide participants through the Sunday readings and Gospels.

Blessed Sacrament Chapel - Adoration Hours
The 24 hour Eucharistic adoration chapel at church is now open for parishioners. Please call our main number 651-429-7771 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM weekdays for the three-digit code to get in the chapel. You will be asked to provide your name. Only one or two worshipers are allowed in the chapel at a time, to ensure social distancing. You must wear a mask in the chapel.

The parish front desk is open from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday–Friday. During office hours, the door from the front entryway towards the front desk (to the right) will be unlocked. However, pick-ups and drop-offs are still available without approaching the front desk itself. If you would like our answering service to pick up your call when the front desk is closed, please call 651-429-7771.
The Parish Office is closed Monday, February 15 in observance of Presidents Day.

YMCA Food Distribution
The YMCA is partnering with Loaves & Fishes and United Health Group to serve free healthy meals to families in need. These organizations believe that supplying healthy fresh food is critical to supporting families in our communities to alleviate food insecurity and hunger. Together they combine the YMCA region-wide distribution network, Loaves & Fishes internationally recognized program, and United Health Group efforts to cover the more than $2 million in food costs and wages for the cafeteria employees preparing meals for people in the Greater Twin Cities.
Families may pick up food from Noon – 1:00 PM Monday through Friday at select YMCA and choose a meal package for a family of four including a protein, vegetables and other fresh food. Also, lunch bags with a sandwich, snacks and fruit are available. The White Bear Lake location is a designated pickup spot. Go to
