ORANCO BOWMEN MONTHLY NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2018
ORANCO BOWMEN ARCHERY CLUB
One minor correction - Family memberships require 8 work parties, not 9 to get a free membership. Everything else is the same.

NO! NO! NO! NO!

No Target Camping! It seems I catch somebody target camping every week and this can and will get you kicked out of the club. When everyone joins, target camping is explained in person along with other range rules. It is also in your membership package. We are a NFAA Field Archery Club. We have 2 - 28 Field ranges. A Field range is just like a golf course in archery, it is divided into 2 units of 14, so you must start on Target # 1 or #15 and shoot in order, moving from one target to the next. You can't go to a golf course and play the 3rd hole over and over and over. Shoot the target, then move to the next. You also can't play a golf course backwards. That also goes with Archery ranges. The practice butts are for sighting in and practice. The Roving field course is for roving period. Everyone should now know what target camping is.

The Bylaws passed at the last meeting and they are on the web page. I would encourage everyone to read them.

There are two major changes:

1st: There are new requirements to join. Before you can become a member, you must attend 2 meetings and 2 work parties. No more showing up and just paying. That's why we are having problems with new people. They just don't seem to know the rules.

2nd: Family membership will be an additional $60.00 per year, so if you are a family membership you might want to do more work parties starting now. Single membership stays $180 and family will be $240 plus initiation and CBH. Work parties stay 6 for individual membership and family will be 9 to get free membership. When a family shows up, you can earn 2 credits at 1 work party and 4 for a cook shack.

Also, as a reminder everyone is supposed to wear there Oranco membership card where it is visible to everyone at all times while at the range.

We are working on the practice butt awning to extend the shaded area at the back side. The extra shade is needed. By the time you are reading this, it should be almost done.

We made all new 3-D target stands and refurbished the 3-D trailer and it seems to be working well. I would like to say thank you to Steve Smith and Todd Dancer for all their help.

We had another car go through our fence at the corner again but this time there is a police report, so this repair won't be coming out of our pocket.

Our quad sprayer is working again. Thanks to Earl Rider and George Morris for taking on the task and doing a great job. Thanks guys.

It’s extremely hot out there so everyone needs to be careful and stay hydrated.

Safari youth shoot at Raahauges

Thank You

The Safari event was on Saturday, July 21 and during the event we taught about 1,500 kids how to shoot a bow . Yes, it was warm and it was a very long day, but the kids really enjoy it.

Again, this year we had 4 clubs helping out ,Riverside Archers, Cherry Valley Bowhunters, Mojave Archers and Oranco Bowmen. This event is so large it takes 4 clubs. Each club sends about 10 helpers and we could still use more help. So, thanks to the other clubs, but a BIG THANKS to our Oranco members Joe Dotterer, Jason Duysings, Chriss Bowles, Bill Leal, Mike Patterson, Pete Witworth, Steve Russel, Christna Avalos, John Vavoudis, and Don Ison.

Well, it’s definitely that hot time of the year. Our next invitational shoot will be the Tomahawk on October 14th. 2018.

We have some work to do to make that happen. The signature target needs to be moved from the hill to a new location down in the bowl. This needs to be done for safety before we can hold the next shoot. I will send further info as things start moving on the project. I am not sure what (if any) help we will need, because the lion’s share of the work will be done with Bill Waltz on a backhoe.

I am still trying to locate a member of the club who does large format printing so we can have some targets printed for both the Tomahawk and the Stump shoot. If you know someone, please contact me.

Thank you to the people who came out to Raahauges for the Safari Days event. We stayed organized and I think we pulled it off really well as usual. The archery programs that we do for the kids tend to take most of the day, even though they finish up around 2:30 or 3:00. As of this weekend, we are now giving double work party credit for these eve nts.

Try to stay cool, keep hydrated. Have fun today and stay alive for tomorrow.

It’s been a while since I last reported, so in no particular order here it goes.

The range is hot and dry and as such looks a little shaggy. There are several targets out on the mountain range that need some attention. I know its hunting season, but it should only take a couple of hours. Get out there and put a little effort into the tumbleweeds as they are getting pretty high.

I took the liberty of cutting up some firewood over by the tree stand. If you want some of that stuff, then go over there and load up. Joe is in the process of throwing a lot of that wood in the trash, so you better hurry. If you would like to use the log splitter to split a few more of those big rounds, then go ahead and get it out an d do it. Make sure you have gas.

Team, you all need to make a mental note that it is NOT O.K. to target camp. I caught a guy out there the other day and got the usual, ignorant “oh I didn’t know” comment. Believe me, everybody knows that we don’t allow target camping out on the roving range. Knock it off! Just because you are the only one out there does not give you the right to break club rules.

I took a very legitimate complaint the other day from a long-time member about the behavior over at the practice butts. Make sure you are following proper safety protocol at the practice butts at all times. No exceptions! After you have collected your arrows and returned to the shooting line, wait for everyone else to return, BEHIND THE LINE , before nocking an arrow. There has been some very dangerous and disrespectful behavior being reported at the practice butts. Please make sure you are doing your part to keep everyone safe!

I wanted to take a moment to thank all the great members that took time out to be part of the recent youth events at Compton gun club and the Safari Club youth safari day. We had some great participation from John Vavoudis, Pete Whitworth, Christine (I forget her last name, but she is new), Steve Russell and others. I know these events are a long day and it is sometimes challenging working with these young people, but they are the future of our sport. It’s always great to help introduce some young people to archery. Thanks guys for all you did and continue to do.

Make sure to check the calendar for upcoming events. I know its hunting season, but there a lot of events that need our attention. We will be holding the State 900 on the weekend of September 8-9, 2018 . If you want to shoot, then get your entry in quickly as we are almost full . We may be looking at adding another weekend in order to handle the overflow. Don’t miss the Big Bear shoot hosted by Cherry Valley Bowhunters. This is the premier 3D shoot in SoCal and promises to be great fun. Get out there and shoot!!

I hope everyone was lucky enough to draw a great tag for this season. If anyone still need Hunter Education in order to get a license then check the DFW website. We have classes going just about every weekend going forward at either Prado or Raahauge’s so get signed up if you need it. Until next time, shoot’em straight and be safe!!

RATTLESNAKES

Watch out for them in this yearly Deer opening, they like to hide in the shade when it gets too hot just like you do.

Be sure to check the place your going to hunt or camp that it is open, there is a lot of closure for FIRE DANGER and if you get caught they will fine you.

The chance you get a Deer, you must tag it first. Then, gut it and get the hide off as soon as you can, if you don't you might end up with a spoiled deer. Deer that's gets too hot will spoil fast. In order to help keep most of the blow flies off, sprinkle black pepper or white vinegar on the animal, inside and out, the more the better. That’s worked for me.

Make sure you fill out the game cards COMPLETELY . Small and large game go on the same card. You can send them to me or Oranco, so good luck on your deer hunt and other game that can be taken and as always, read the regulations! Don't get in trouble, it can be costly. It’s very important to validate the deer at the first place you can, any law officer can do it for you.

I want to start by thanking everyone that came to the last Club Meeting. We had more than triple the normal meeting attendance and the Board values and appreciates your participation and input. I hope to see you and others at future meetings. The Board needs your feedback on a regular basis!

T here is a LOT that goes into running Oranco and we covered a variety of topics at the meeting. Here are some of the highlights:

* Amended and formally adopted the Club By-Laws. The final version will be posted on the Club website.

* Reminder: CLOSE and LOCK the front gate. DO NOT give the lock code to others. This is a safety/security issue as well as theft of club resources/funds. Oranco is open to the public on Sundays from 8:30AM to 2PM. Public fees are $14 first shooter, $6 for additional shooters up to a maximum $26. A Board Member will open the office and gate for the public.

* Oranco will discontinue the use of squirrel traps for pest control. Concerns about this practice were discussed and alternative methods of pest control were agreed upon.

* The Club collected annual membership dues comparable to last years’ membership renewals. Our bank account is healthy but there are numerous expenses on the horizon. We will talk about anticipated expenses at the next meeting including plans for:

o Trimming, removing, and replacing trees;
o Extending the awning at the practice butts;
o Rebuilding the interior of the main cook shack;
o Controlling weeds;
o Replacing tractor and backhoe equipment;
o Replacing/repairing the tree stand to insurance standards;
o Repairing/replacing the car bridge;
o Purchasing 3Ds for tournaments; etc.
The top priority is maintaining the safety of our members and guests. Also, I’d love to see some safari and dinosaur 3Ds at the next tournament!!! (HINT! HINT!)

* We received good participation in the Club Social Survey emailed to members last month. We will review the results and discuss potential new club events at the next Club Meeting. Come give us your thoughts and ideas!

* Hunting season is here! Reminder to mail or turn in your game cards to Bill at the Club Office. Don’t forget to include your phone number and witness information on the card.

* The State 900 Tournament is September 8-9 at Oranco. Registration forms are in the club office. Work Party credits available for helping out.

* Joe continues to work hard keeping up with range maintenance. If you are looking for work party credits outside of assisting with tournament events, contact Joe and he will set you and/or a few of your closest friends up with your very own work party!

Club Meeting Minutes are available in a binder at the Club office or email Ob.Secretary@outlook.com for a copy. The Summary of Board/Member Actions from the last meeting are included below.

Two Year Board Member

By: Al Wiscovitch - Two Year Board Member

Hi Everyone,

Hoping everyone is holding up with all the heat at the moment? These are the dog days of summer please remember to hydrate when out on the range and shooting tournaments.

Th e Big Bear 3-D Tournament is always one of my fun shoots of the year, if you haven’t been to this one you need to put this on your calendar: Aug. 4th & 5th . They set this one up at Jenks Lake every year in the San Bernardino Mountains. You can camp out with your trailers, motor homes, and tents. However, this is a dry camping area, so you will need to bring your own water and supplies. They do have porta potties on site.

They also put on a good breakfast, lunch and dinner, big raffle with lots of prizes and fun games! Not to mention the great awards they give out. So get signed up .

Thanks for reading my message! If you have any questions give me a call…

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings. We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.

10 Affordable Deer Hunting States

Thinking of making a deer hunting road trip this season? Looking to cash in on additional deer tags outside your home state this year? Deer hunting as a nonresident is much more expensive than it was 15 years ago when I made my first out-of-state journey. Fortunately, it’s still within reach for working-class folks. Choose a state from the following list, and you can enjoy good to great hunting without going broke. Here’s a look at our list of 10 affordable deer hunting states.

Does Brace Height Really Affect Accuracy?

It’s long been said that brace height is a key factor in a bow’s accuracy. Shorter brace height bows tend to have the reputation of being tough to tame. They were wild machines that only the best archers could handle. So many shooters leaned towards a higher brace height bow. Instead of a bow with a 5″ brace height they would select a bow with a 6″ or 7″ brace height to maximize their accuracy. But does brace height really affect accuracy when it comes to the bows we’re shooting today?

This is the video that got it all started!
