Cool, quick info . . .
  • 1440 Reminder
  • Pix from our museum lecture
  • Zentangle article in USA Today's Best Years magazine
  • Pokeroot takes root in our front yard!
Enjoy!

We are looking forward to returning to the inspiring campus of 1440 Multiversity in Scotts Valley, California in just a few weeks.

Yes, the trees are beautiful. Yes, the campus is awesome. Yes, the rooms are delightful. Yes, the classrooms are comfortable.

But just wait until you taste the home-made coconut yogurt! I think that will be the first thing Maria and I will eat when we return!

Seriously, this is a stunning setting for a Zentangle event and we look forward to seeing you in the workshops and enjoying all the delightful conversations that take place at events such as these.

(Please note: These are not teacher certification classes. For info on our Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) seminars, see this page.)

Zentangle Weekend - Creating Art and Life
September 28 - 30, 2018
Friday - Sunday, 2 nights

Immerse yourself in an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Discover the Zentangle Method-an elegant metaphor for deliberate artistry in life.

At first glance, a Zentangle creation can seem intricate and complicated. But when you learn how it is done, you realize how simple it is-sort of like learning the secret behind a magic trick. Then, when you create a piece of Zentangle art, you realize how fun and engrossing the process is.

We are always making "strokes" (thoughts, words, deeds) in our life. By practicing the Zentangle Method's suggestion to make each stroke deliberate, you understand how those apparently small and insignificant "strokes" of our moment-to-moment lives contribute to an overall life pattern. This is one reason that we say that life is an art form and everyone is an artist.

The Zentangle Method: Beyond the Basics
September 30 - October 2, 2018
Sunday - Tuesday, 2 nights

Life is an intricate fabric of overlapping patterns: beneath the facade of chaos is order; inside the complexity of the mind is a series of simple realizations; and within each of us, no matter who we are, is an artist waiting to take our pen to the page.

Join the Zentangle founding family, Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, along with their daughters Molly Hollibaugh and Martha Huggins, and take a closer look at the magic behind the one stroke at a time approach to pattern drawing.

In this 2-day program of artistry and elemental design you will:
  • Focus on and explore specific tangle categories
  • Hone in on techniques and perspectives to take visual complexity and break it down into basic steps
  • Ask "What makes a tangle?" and get back to the root of the practice by untangling your way to the answer.
From the chaos of organic tangles to the order of grid-based tangles, this class will deepen your understanding of the method and sharpen your tangling skills.

Zentangle Experience at the NMAI

We had SUCH a good time at our lecture at the National Museum of American Illustration last week!

In part of our lecture, we pointed out patterns throughout the museum that people often overlook, such as in rugs:

frames:

door handles:

moldings:

and paintings:

Then we showed how those patterns (along with many others) inspired the tangles in this piece which we created for that event,

and which has now found a home in the NMAI collection:

Maria Thomas with Judy Cutler, co-founder of the NMAI.

The event was recorded. As soon as the video is ready, we look forward to sharing it with you.

We are both ever so grateful to our angels for connecting us with Judy and Laurence Cutler (see previous newsletter for that story) and to Judy and Laurence for this delightful milestone on our Zentangle adventure.

Zentangle in USA Today's Best Years Magazine

Nancy Monson, CZT, wrote a great article about Zentangle which came out today in Best Years, a magazine published by USA Today.

The issue is available at selected newsstands, bookstores, and at this link.

Congratulations, Nancy!

Poke-Root Lands in our Yard!

Is it?

Could it be?

Yes . . . it's poke-root!

The inspiration for two of our favorite tangles ( poke-root and poke-leaf) has put down roots in our front yard under the watchful eyes of one of our angels.

What a delightful synchronicity!

Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this exciting adventure with us and with each other.

With all best regards,

Rick, Maria, Martha, Molly, Bijou, and all the Zentangle staff
