KENYA'S CORNER

Dear SB Readers,

THIS INTERNET FAME is getting to me.

This newsletter and Facebook and Twitter detailing my running battle trying to keep Mark Wade out of my Master's well-stocked library has made me a minor celebrity. It's affecting me.

I am gaining weight. I can't sleep, and I am having nightmares. My nerves are shot. Dogs from across the country are using chain howling at all hours to reach me. Even cats are stalking the house, leaving Milkbones on the doorstep. Cats! They are worse than paparazzi.

Thankfully, Viking football is here, and I can calm my nerves on the sofa with my master and relax once a week--knowing Wade's Ravens will be near the bottom of the heap this year.

SPEAKING OF MILKBONES . . . WIN A FREE EMERGING CIVIL WAR BOOK!

Just mail me a Milkbone or small dog biscuit and a short note why you would like one of the Emerging Civil War series titles, and I will pose with your treat, post a short video on Facebook of me eating it, and personally see you get entered into the drawing to receive one of your choice! Woof!

THE NEW WEBSITE!

Thanks for the large number of page hits on our new website, and for signing up for free accounts, wishlists of books, and so on. Deeply appreciated.

Please note that at the bottom of the home page is our daily blog of what is happening here behind the scenes, written by various members of the SB team. Check it out. Share them on your social sites. It matters, and we are thankful.

UNPUBLISHED PHOTOS/LETTERS COMING IN!

As most of you know, The War Outside My Window, edited by Janet Croon, has been making a big splash across the country. I won't elaborate here, but if you have not read it--seriously, do yourself a favor and get this book. (We have signed book plates.)

One of the cool things about books is that once they are published, descendants and others with materials related to the topic come forward. A direct descendant of Edmund Gresham (Uncle Edmund in LeRoy's diary) reached out. He and his family are thrilled about the book, and have sent me several letters and photos we can use in the third edition.
Thomas Gresham (copyrighted image. Cannot be used without permission.)

Pictured here is a previously unpublished photo of Thomas Gresham in Confederate uniform! This was taken in February 1864 while LeRoy and his mother Mary Gresham looked on. LeRoy wrote several times about taking the photo, and what he thought about it. When you read the book, you will discover he was NOT happy about how it turned out...

Wednesday February 17th 1864: Very cold indeed....Thomas' photograph came home and I am so disappointed in it. It is a failure.

In looking at the photo, I think I see why he did not like it. Thomas is almost grimacing, his lips pursed, and his normal happy countenance nonexistent. To LeRoy, the photo simply did not resemble the Thomas he so knew and loved. As usual, LeRoy was not shy about telling us what he thought.

SO MUCH MORE COMING. . . Enjoy, and thank you for continuing to share information about this book, and please keep the reviews on Amazon coming. We have 78 and want to reach 100!

SPRING (Jan - June) 2019...

It is that time again, where Ted and Sarah go crazy gathering all the data, titles, and all the rest to get the lineup ready for next year. It is shaping up well. Here is a sample:

Civil War:

We have several titles, including a return by James Hessler (together with Britt Isenberg) entitled  Gettysburg's Peach Orchard: Longstreet, Sickles, and the Bloody Fight for the "Commanding Ground" Along the Emmitsburg Road --the first full-length study on this incredibly important patch of ground and how it shaped the rest of the battle. Both authors are Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guides.

Revolutionary War:

George Washington's Nemesis: The Outrageous Treason and Unfair Court-Martial of General Charles Lee during the American Revolution, by Christian McBurney. This fascinating book delves deeply into Lee and his relationship with Washington, his actions on and off the field, and how history has come to judge him. McBurney challenges some entrenched conclusions...

INTRODUCING THE NEW "Savas Beatie Spotlight Series":

The digital short series is the brainchild of Alex Rossino (author of the magnificent Civil War novel Six Days in September), and master cartographer Gene Thorp. In essence they suggested publishing meaty articles far too long for standard articles, but much too short for a book (say, roughly, 12,000 to 20,000 words), with footnotes, photos, maps, etc.

The first two in this series will be as follows:

1.  The Tale Untwisted: George McClellan and the Discovery of Lee's Lost Orders, by Alex Rossino and Gene Thorp. This inaugural installment is another entry into the Lost Orders controversy, with a fresh take and, I believe, a conclusive settlement of the issue.

2.  A Colossal Mistake:  The Invasion of Georgia and General Sherman's Decision to Bypass the Augusta Powder Works, by Theodore P. Savas.

Thank you again for your support of this publishing program, and please mail me a milkbone or dog biscuit.

Woof!

We are pleased to announce two new releases!
Both books are now available. Call the office this week at 916-941-6896, visit our website, or  email us  to place your order for SIGNED copies of both books.

James S. Pula completes his magisterial work on this important Union command. This is a comprehensive personalized portrait of the men who fought in the "unlucky" XI Corps - from the difficulties it faced to the accomplishments it earned.

This book paints a detailed picture of the critical role the quiet and modest cavalryman known to his men as "Honest John" or "Old Steadfast" played at Gettysburg.

Have you checked out the new Savas Beatie Blog on our website?  Well, what are you waiting for?

Each of us will be sharing news and information on a daily basis.  You will find book tour dates and upcoming release details. Accolades and general office info will be posted as well.

ABOUT: The 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th Georgia infantry regiments spent most of the Civil War fighting under Brig. Gen. George Thomas "Tige" Anderson in Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Until now, no biographical roster of their members has ever been published. These Georgians saw it all, from the bloody battle of First Manassas through the ferocious combat of Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the long siege of Petersburg. They finally furled their banners at Appomattox. Nearly 5,000 men passed through these four Georgia regiments. These rosters offer a long overdue record of these men.

Each roster is organized by company in a simple and easy-to-use format. Entries feature full names (if known), promotions, demotions, casualties, transfers, and resignations for every rank-an unprecedented look into men and the structure and evolution of these organizations. They include the most comprehensive examination of the personnel originally enlisted and their subsequent service histories within these units in chronological order for the first time.

Compiler and author Richard Allen has spent nearly two decades researching scores of archives and other sources to prepare these rosters. He utilized primary sources such as the Official Records, Compiled Service Records, newspaper accounts, diaries, letters, census information, burial records, and a variety of documents from both published sources and private collections. Students of the Civil War, genealogists, and enthusiasts of Georgia history will find these rosters invaluable. Everyone who uses them owes Rick Allen a hearty, and heartfelt, "thank you!"

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A 1990 graduate of the Maryland Institute of Art, Rick Allen is a lifelong student of the American Civil War. The Maryland native spent a large part of his youth roaming the battlefields of the Eastern Theater and has remained a student of the Civil War ever since. He spent fifteen years researching the history and composition of the men who composed the four Georgia infantry regiments featured in these rosters.

And speaking of the author, Rick broke new ground by sending me a bottle of outstanding gin as a way of saying thanks for publishing his roster. What a quality guy (for a Ravens fan). I appreciate the gesture, Rick. It was my pleasure.
Out and About
Here are some photos from a select few recent summer events--our busiest season of the year!

We always enjoy seeing many Savas Beatie authors in the same place. Here, left to right, are Frank Varney (General Grant and the Rewriting of History), Michael Hardy (General Lee's Immortals), and Jeff Hunt (Meade and Lee After Gettysburg). They met and signed books for many visitors at the Gettysburg VC.

Recently, author Tom Ryan stopped by Bethany Beach Books in Delaware to present Essays on Delaware during the Civil War and sign copies of his book Spies, Scouts and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign.

During the Gettysburg Anniversary weekend, our authors kept a very busy calendar. Among those who spoke and signed books at the Gettysburg Heritage Center were Frank Varney and Dave Shultz.
