New Grant Announcement!

We just returned from Knoxville and are proud to report that the AARV/ACVSMR Summit went swimmingly. Thank you so much to all of our speakers for your time and expertise. A special shout-out to our sponsors as well - PulseVet, Respond Systems and The Honest Kitchen - for your generous contributions. We also enjoyed the subsequent IAVRPT symposium and connecting with AARV members as well as many international attendees. Thanks for stopping by our booth and getting to know us!

In other news, the AARV is proud to announce that we are sponsoring a new grant of $5,000 for original research conducted by a non-traditional ACVSMR resident. We believe that supporting these residents will advance the field of rehab and provide them with much-needed financial assistance. The winning resident will present their research at the AARV track at the VMX conference in 2021. Please see the article below and the Grant Opportunities page in the Members Area of our website for further details.

Don't forget that we still have two $2,500 AARV member grants (one sponsored by the AARV and the second by Purina) and one AARV student member grant (sponsored by Royal Canin). Deadlines for submissions are fast approaching! These are some sweet membership perks that will benefit our field AND your practice so please take advantage of them. Again, see the Grant Opportunities page in the Members Area of our website for further details.

Lastly, the AARV board is a fun group to work with and we have two slots opening up for 2019! Please vote for the position of Legislative Liaison by August 15th and nominate a Treasurer by September 1st. See more details below.

As always, please contact the AARV board if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

Regards,

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?

Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?

Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) has created a new online course to demystify clinical research for practicing rehabilitation therapists, interns and residents.  Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research  is taught by CRI faculty member  Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR who has spent more than 30 years doing research.

The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.

AARV members receive a 10% tuition discount. If you have questions or are interested in registering for the next session, email CRI at [email protected].

AARV Communications Director

Hello VetRehabTechs!

The 10th International Symposium on Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy July 30-August 3, 2018, in Knoxville, Tennessee, was well attended by veterinary technicians. We are so excited that the #vetrehabtechs movement is gaining momentum. It was exciting to connect with our board and deputy members Wendy Davies, Mary Ellen Goldberg, Maria Maddox, Kelley Meyer, Dawn Hickey, and John Nielsen in person! The laboratory sessions and lectures were diverse and provided by top-notch speakers from a variety of backgrounds and countries around the world. The social and networking opportunities were plentiful, and the APRVT members were excited to chat with so many veterinary technicians about the Veterinary Technician Specialty. Dr. Darryl Millis' band "The Mongrels" made the banquet one to remember.

Dawn Hickey and Mary Ellen Goldberg spoke about "Pain Management for the Athlete During Training and Performance" during the symposium, and their lecture was well received and jam-packed full of valuable information.

Mary Ellen Goldberg was part of the AARV panel discussion "Viewpoints from a DVM, CVT and PT on Common Rehab Conditions" and also spoke about "Physical Rehabilitation and the Geriatric Patient: Are Fido and Socks Senior Olympians?" in the AARV Summit.

Mary Ellen Goldberg also presented her poster board "Multimodal Management of a Non Human Primate Using Analgesics, Physical Rehabilitation, Techniques, and Acupuncture." Way to go, ME!

Jenn Panko and Dr. Pedro Rivera teamed up to talk about APRVT and AARV at the lunch meeting on Wednesday - an opportunity for groups to introduce their organization. Thanks, Dr. Darryl Millis, for the opportunity for us to highlight how the APRVT and AARV work together to support each other and our members.

Next month we will be highlighting all the fun and learning that is happening with Kristen Hagler and Lis Conarton at WVC Technician Takeover right now and news from our First Inaugural Veterinary Technician Specialty Examination and the winner of the Online Pet Health Webinar Contest at IAVRPT.
