Message from the Chair
of the Yavneh Board of Trustees
Welcome back Yavneh families and community. I am extremely excited to continue to serve this coming year as Board Chair during a period of dynamic growth, innovation, and advancement of the school.
Let me start by providing a brief overview of the core governance responsibilities of the Board of Trustees. First, the
Board is responsible for designing and shepherding the long-term vision of the school and ensuring Yavneh's mission, philosophy, and core values guide our decision making and policy development. This strategic planning offers direction to the head of school and senior team as they manage and grow Yavneh.
Second, the Board provides sound financial governance to support school operations and oversees adherence to a set of
bylaws that conform to legal requirements, fiduciary duties, and areas of compliance. The Board is focused on upholding the highest ethical standards and safeguards against conflicts of interest.
And third, we are responsible for the head of school.
The Board must work in tandem with the head and other school adminÂistrators, always being careful to focus its primary work on long-range and strategic issues not the daily operations.
We are very fortunate to have an exceptional leader in Zvi Weiss running our school and driving collaboration with the Board of Trustees. Through the efforts of Zvi, the senior team, faculty, and staff, we have built a nationally recognized academic institution.
The Board itself has a diversity of members who provide balanced perspectives and representation across our community. The Trustees consist of current parents, former parents, faculty and administration from other schools, and members of both the Rabbinical and general community. Each member brings distinct talents, skills, professions, and life experiences to the Trustee role to enable a range of opinions and ideas helping set an informed course for our strategic direction.
As we focus on the coming year, the Board will drive several key initiatives:
- Building for the Future: With another year of record student enrollment, we have an opportunity to envision and reimagine the physical expansion and footprint of the school. Shortly after our highly anticipated upstairs remodel is unveiled, we will move into the next set of campus renovations and invite everyone to support Yavneh's growth.
- Community Outreach: Our school continues to be an anchor and guiding light in our community and we have a responsibility to reach out to welcome and strengthen broader relationships across agencies, synagogues, partners, supporters, donors, and community members throughout Silicon Valley and beyond.
- Accreditation: This coming year is our every 7th year accreditation process. Our last check-in with the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) was met with an extremely positive accreditation report - one in which we were asked to be a showcase for other schools to visit and learn from us. We have continued to achieve so many more milestones and received multiple recognitions since the last CAIS visit and I am personally looking forward to meeting the accreditation team this coming Spring. We will knock their socks off!
The Board of Trustees appreciates your support and commitment to Yavneh Day School and I thank you for partnering with us on the education of our children and growing a truly amazing school.
I hope you and your children have a terrific year. I am very excited for what the future will bring and Shabbat Shalom.

As a reminder, if you are driving other students on a field trip, please turn in your parent driver form, a photo copy of your current insurance policy, and a photocopy of your driver's license. The office can make photo copies for you.

Tashlich Friday, September 7th
|
We mark the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashana by observing a model
Tashlich
ceremony. Traditionally observed on the afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashanah, tashlich is a ceremony in which we symbolically cast off our misdeeds from the previous year by tossing bread crumbs into a body of water. At Yavneh on the day before we close for Rosh Hashanah, we do this special ceremony with our buddy classes at the Los Gatos Creek. We discuss and share reflections on our actions from the past year that we want to wash away and we also set goals for the year ahead. Parents are welcome to join us for this activity. Please see your room parent email this week for exact times in the morning.

Club J Ha'Moadon
Extended Care
Drop-in care for grades K-5 is available before school beginning at 7:00am and after school until 6:00pm. Extended care is $8.00/hour for JCC members and $10.00/hour for non-members (1 hour minimum charge). If your child is enrolled in JCC Youth Programs or Yavneh Enrichment classes, they will be escorted between Club J and these classes. Please review the behavior policy included in this parent handbook with your child and return a signed copy to Club J staff on your child's first day of extended care.

Kitah Alef is getting ready for the High Holidays. They are also creating their own learning environment, including class rules and jobs.

Kitah Bet has been practicing playing math games and working on sportsmanship. They also began Number Talks in Hebrew, and are using manipulatives, 100s charts, cards, and dice to work with in math.

Kitah Gimel participated in activities that emphasized the importance of recognizing the roles each of them play in their class. They discussed how they can support one another in reaching everyone's "Hopes and Dreams" this year.

Kitah Hay is exploring the reading comprehension strategy of use text features (titles, headings, captions, graphic features, and more) to support them in the reading of nonfiction texts. Using their social studies texts as a resource, students hunted for visuals within the text that support comprehension. As students identified graphs, charts, maps, timelines, captions, and more, each student was invited to stand up to display a text feature card.

Kitah Hay has been engineering using different building materials to create slopes for objects to travel from one place to another in our new STEAM space.

Fall After-School Classes at the APJCC
Registration is now open for many of the JCC's fall enrichment classes. There are some new options this year including chess, coding, and Dungeons & Dragons, in addition to ongoing options like fitness and sports, cartooning, martial arts, and yoga. For details and registration:
