Important Conversations
Mandatory Online Training
Must be completed before Sept. 1

As students prepare to join our campus community, it is important to know that we aim to foster an environment where all community members feel safe and supported. It is on all of us to make, and encourage others to make, healthy and respectful decisions that help cultivate a caring community.

To provide students with opportunities to learn more about ways to make healthier decisions and support a healthy community, the University partners with EVERFI to deliver online modules focused on alcohol and other drugs and sexual and relationship violence prevention. Students received an e-mail this summer about completing two interactive modules that introduce students to concepts, resources and policies related to substance use, healthy personal and professional relationships, and interpersonal violence.

Each module takes about 60 minutes to complete and they can work at their own pace from any computer. Modules must be completed by September 1, 2018.

Transitioning to College
Making the Transition:
Advice from the Parents Office and Our Partners
Friday, August 24, 11:00am

In a few short weeks, your student will be arriving on campus to begin a new journey that will be filled with excitement, exploration, and new opportunities. Of course every college experience is unique and may come with some challenges. You can help make sure your student knows where to go when those challenges arise. The Office of Student Assistance is there to help support your student through those difficult moments, as well as provide them with a space where resiliency, self-advocacy, and personal and academic success can be achieved. We invite you to learn more about us and our case management services at the “Making the Transition: Advice from the Parents Office and Our Partners” session on Friday, August 24 at 11 a.m.

 We encourage you to check out our website http://studentassistance.syr.edu/ and share it with your student so they know we are a resource available to them for support!”
WellsLink Leadership Program
Founded in 2003, The WellsLink Leadership Program, managed by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, is a nationally recognized academic excellence and leadership program for first-year students of color at Syracuse University. Through structured academic, social, and cultural enrichment activities, WellsLink scholars train for exceptional success at the University and beyond. WellsLink participants enjoy two semesters of support, and upon their successful transition into the second year, they join an exclusive community of WellsLink alumni who will be recognized by faculty, staff, and peers as high achievers and community leaders. Participants from the first-year program will also have the opportunity to participate in a newly developed program for WellsLink sophomores. To learn more, visit the WellsLink Leadership Program website.

First-year students may apply using this online application form  .  The deadline is Friday, August 24, 2018.

FERPA and the Disclosure of Disciplinary Records
Access to disciplinary records is provided in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.  Except in unusual circumstances as determined in its sole discretion, and consistent with federal law, Syracuse University will seek to notify parents or guardians of conduct issues involving dependent students as follows:
  1. In an emergency;
  2. After final adjudication and finding of responsibility in all alcohol and drug-related offenses;
  3. After final adjudication and finding of responsibility in all offenses resulting in disciplinary probation, suspension or expulsion.

Students do have the ability to share their conduct records with their parents by completing the “Consent to Disclose Form”, however this form should only be completed if and when a student actually has a conduct record to share.  The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities does not keep a file of preemptively signed forms submitted by parents.  (If a student does not have a conduct record, there is no file in which to put the form.) Since the records belong to the student, the student must complete and submit the form when necessary.

For more information on FERPA and the definition of a dependent student, please review the “For Parents” section of our website http://studentconduct.syr.edu/for-parents/parentalnotification.htm l .
