As they start the magical process of transforming from students to doctors, the 167th class to enter the School of Medicine received their white coats and recited the Hippocratic Oath together in Gaston Hall.
Since joining the School of Medicine faculty in 1961, Donald Knowlan, MD, professor emeritus, has been recognized repeatedly for his teaching, but at the White Coat Ceremony, he tells incoming students that the patient is the most important teacher they will ever have.
Jan LaRocque, PhD, associate professor of human studies at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, received an NIH grant to study how cells recognize and repair DNA damage while continuing to foster undergraduate research opportunities in her lab.
In researching topics such as infant mortality, food deserts, hypertension and more, local high school students participating in the Gateway Exploration Program (GEP) explored issues that directly affect their communities.
Shannon White, a doctoral candidate working in Chunling Yi's lab at Georgetown Lombardi, was one of four graduate students at Georgetown to receive a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
 




Daniel Sulmasy, MD, PhD, the inaugural Andre Hellegers Professor of Biomedical Ethics with co-appointments in the departments of philosophy and medicine, has been named acting director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) at Georgetown University. Sulmasy also serves as a faculty member with the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics. In his new role, Sulmasy will oversee all KIE programs and scholarship while continuing to serve as KIE senior research scholar.

After a rigorous national search, Ming-Jung Ho, MD, DPhil, has been appointed associate director of the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Education (CENTILE) and director of education research at MedStar Health. In this joint role, Ho will oversee CENTILE's programmatic opportunities, work with faculty at MedStar Health to publish their educational scholarship and more.

A clinical trial being conducted at Georgetown explores if nicotine can slow or stop memory loss in people experiencing mild memory problems, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
 




Mark Matsuura, an MBA candidate in the McDonough School of Business, has spent his summer working with a North Carolina nonprofit that provides evidence-based sexual health education and services for teens, where he is developing a model that allows the organization to reduce their reliance on grant funding and use alternative methods of financing.
