2018 ELCA Youth Gathering Evaluation Session - September 8
Gathering Adult Leaders Invited!
As part of the ELCA Youth Gathering's ongoing efforts to grow in its mission of faith formation in teenagers, Gathering leadership is conducting a series of in-person listening sessions. Your input is important and valued.

We invite all Pacifica and Southwest California Synod adult leaders who attended the 2018 Gathering to join us for a time of reflection and conversation at the Lutheran Center for Mission & Learning (Pacifica Synod Office, 1801 Park Court Place, Bldg. C, Santa Ana) on Saturday, September 8 from 9:30 to 11:30. Light refreshments will be served.

In order to plan for our time together, you are encouraged to RSVP to Terri Robertson at [email protected] .  A brief set of reflection questions will be sent the week prior to the session to help you prepare for our time together.

In addition to these in-person evaluations, the ELCA is offering limited space in an online "in-person" evaluation. These will be on the following days (all Central time):
  • Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
  • Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
  • Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
Sign up for the online evaluations here. For more information on any of our evaluations, please email Gathering staff at [email protected].

"How to Create a Safety Plan for Your Church" Workshop
Saturday, September 15
The Christian Education Network of the ELCA presents "How to Create a Safety Plan for Your Church" on Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pacifica Synod office in Santa Ana.

We are dedicated to lifelong faith formation in the home and congregation. Our goal is to help churches create a customized plan to meet a congregation's safety needs in a building, with people, who are worshiping, learning, and serving.

Our whole church approach is for anyone seeking to intentionally create a peaceful environment for people of all ages. Attend a four-hour workshop and walk away with a customized guide and training method useful in addressing all your unique building, people, and activity concerns.

For more information, and to register for this $25 workshop, go to www.faithfulteaching.org and download the 'Table of Contents' for the generic safety template. This document will give you the full scope and sequence of a customized safety guide.

Your $25 registration fee includes a generic Safety Template and Training Manual.
Refreshments will be provided. Please bring a sack lunch and a laptop or tablet with a USB port (iPads do not have USB ports). Participants download the generic template from a secure thumb drive (yours to keep) and begin to customize it during the workshop. The training manual is provided in a binder, and also as an electronic file on the thumb drive.

Rest Assured! This approach does not replace all the hard work currently being done in your church. It incorporates your existing programs and best practices in a way the entire congregation can support. Increased awareness and support will lead to greater cooperation, reduced anxiety, and increased confidence.
We hope to see you at workshop soon!

ELCA News & Resources
"We are the Branches" - ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
In her August column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, asks, "Is it possible to be Lutheran and an ecumenist?" Yes, of course. For we are "scripturally, confessionally and even constitutionally wired to be an ecumenical church."

Read her column in English at https://bit.ly/2MhhULu and in Spanish at https://bit.ly/2ORpQ7X.
Your Feedback is Requested
The " Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice" interweaves a confession of faith, theology, Scripture, history, science, sociology and even hymnody. The
Women and Justice: One in Christ social statement task force needs your feedback in order to revise this text and then to send a proposed social statement to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in 2019.

Because social statements speak on behalf of the ELCA as a whole church, the task force would like to hear your thoughts on the draft. Is it readable and clear? Is this what the church is being called to say about what women and girls need?

The task force will read and consider all feedback it receives through September 30. Feedback can be sent through an online or paper survey form or through letters and emails. For more information and resources, go to ELCA.org/womenandjustice.

Thank you to those who have already read the draft and responded, and thanks in advance to those who will!

Introducing Three Sides Podcast

Three Sides is a monthly podcast featuring stories from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). As a church that believes God is calling us into the world - together, Three Sides will present diverse voices from across the ELCA. Listen as we share unique stories from across this church.

In our introductory episode, Shanna Crawford, Philip LaDeur and Andrew Steele talk about why they're excited to co-host the ELCA's new podcast. Our hosts also give listeners a sneak peek of the first episode, "Women who lead," which launches in August.

Portico Benefits Services News

Greetings from Portico!

It's hard to believe ... Annual Enrollment season is already approaching. In mid-August, we'll be emailing you information about 2019 rates, specific dates, and a link to your 2019 Custom Comparison Report!

Here's a quick overview:
  • September - When your organization decides which health benefit option to offer
  • October 1- 26 - When employers make that selection on EmployerLink
  • October 31 - November 14 - When sponsored members make benefit selections on myPortico

myPortico is Getting a New Look!  In early August, we'll be refreshing our website to give you an improved experience with easy access to your information and a mobile-friendly design.  You'll notice the change when it turns from Orange to Blue.
Share Your Stories - "God's work. Our hands." Sunday
"God's work. Our hands." Sunday is less than one month away, Sunday, September 9.  You will find the resources you need to plan your activities and worship, invite your neighbors and promote within your community. There are videos to watch and share for inspiration. New this year are Spanish-language postcards, door hangers and social memes.  You also can order yellow "God's work. Our hands." T-shirts

If you haven't done so already, please sign up your congregation for the day of service by answering a couple of quick questions in the ELCA's survey. Your registration helps us share and tell stories about the good work that we do together.

The ELCA wants to hear from you! Shortly after September 9, please share with them your congregation's activities. Send your stories and photos to [email protected] so that together we can celebrate what God is doing through the congregations and ministries of the ELCA.

We'd also like to share your stories and photos within the Pacifica Synod. If you'd like to participate, please email 3-4 of your favorite photos, along with a brief description, to [email protected] by September 17 for inclusion in our e-news.
