As Reported in The New York Times
California Today: The Increasing Strain on State Firefighters
Firefighters are working 24 to 36 hour shifts to put out several large fires across the state, often with little rest between assignments. For many, the strain of this recent spate of blazes has been compounded with a wildfire season that has become year-round and more intense.
“There used to be a rhythm to this, and you could at least count on that rhythm,” said Brian Rice, who retired from fighting fires in 2011 and is now president of California Professional Firefighters, a statewide union.
Since 2012, there has not been a month without a wildfire, according to state emergency management officials. The intensity of the fires has appeared to increase as well; the fires in 2017 were among the most destructive in California’s history, leaving 46 people dead and causing nearly $12 billion in damage.
Mike Daw, the executive director of the Firefighters Burn Institute, which works with injured firefighters through the U.C. Davis Burn Unit in Sacramento, said
"
Firefighters are a unique culture, putting themselves in danger, and a lot of times they feel like they can endure more than a normal human being can"

The Liaison Response Team
(LRT) is a unique program made up of firefighters whose mission is to provide assistance to firefighters, their families and their department in the aftermath of a burn injury. LRT members are dedicated to the well-being and recovery of their fellow brother and sister firefighters and understand the importance of help and emotional support during critical times and also ensures the firefighter’s family is taken care of through meals, housing or by making other special arrangements. The Firefighters Burn Institute provides resources to also assist with post recovery including PTSD treatment, peer support groups and funding to send the firefighter to burn survivor support conferences.

Youth Firesetter Program
(YFP) is a program designed around preventing a catastrophy. Whether mandated through court or sought out by a concerned family member, YFP provides a cohesive partnership among community agencies, interacting together, to reduce the number of fire injuries and deaths by providing assistance and education to youths who exhibit firesetting behavior.
- Youth up 18 years of age represent 2/3 of arson arrests.
- USFA reports that a majority of youth firesetting is conducted by youth under 10 years old.
- Without intervention, youth are 5 times more likely to use fire inappropriately again.

Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp
November 2 - 4, 2018
|
|
Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp
is a FREE
burn recovery program designed for preschool burn survivors, ages three to six years old and their families. This unique, three-day program helps families understand and cope with physical and emotional challenges associated with burn recovery. In a supportive camp environment, families have the opportunity to meet other families who are overcoming similar challenges.
Three parallel programs make up a unique camp where families are able to play, laugh, and learn. The Preschool Program focuses on healthy emotional and physical recovery through therapy play and socialization with other burn survivors. The Sibling Program provides therapeutic recreational activities for older children and a daycare for infants and toddlers. Siblings are recognized as important and unique supporters to their burn survivor brother or sister. The Adult Program assists parents and caregivers by providing the support and education necessary to nurture a child who has suffered a severe burn injury.
