School expansions continue following GMP approvals
Trustees approved guaranteed maximum prices for several school expansion projects across the district that were approved by voters in the 2017 bond election, moving toward further work on the projects.
In one agenda item, trustees approved the guaranteed maximum prices for phase 2 of the expansion process of Eaton High School as well as Tidwell and Wilson middle schools. Buford Thompson Corporation is handling these projects.
In a separate agenda item, trustees approved guaranteed maximum prices for the second phase of fine arts additions at Chisholm Trail, Medlin and Pike middle schools. Northstar Builders is handling these projects.
Long-range planning community provides update on work
The Northwest ISD long-range planning committee recently began meeting to discuss needs for future district facilities, and members of the committee provided trustees with a report regarding their work.
The committee has met once and has five more meetings before being tentatively scheduled to provide their recommendations for future facility needs to the school board on Jan. 30. Updates on their meeting progress are available at

Campus improvement goals and objectives approved
To ensure continuous advancement, campuses annually create goals and objectives designed to improve student performance and best meet their needs. Trustees approved these items after previously discussing them at their Sept. 23 board meeting.
Instructional material selection committee for 2020-21 approved
Each year, the Texas Education Agency and school districts across the state review instructional materials for new adoption cycles. Trustees approved a selection committee to oversee the process of determining new instructional materials.
This committee will work with campus leaders and teachers to select new instructional materials for English language arts and related fields, including ELA electives and English for speakers of other languages. The committee will review materials in November and also send campuses those materials for their input. In January, the committee will hear from publishers and present the materials for public viewing before committee and school board votes in February.
School FIRST public hearing discloses ‘superior’ rating
As required by Texas law, Northwest ISD held its School FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) public input meeting for financial transparency. For the 17th consecutive year, Northwest ISD received a “superior” rating, the top classification possible for its financial integrity.
In other action, the board
- Recognized Byron Nelson’s Ron Myers and Northwest’s Ryan Barnhart for being named Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year, respectively, by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals Region 11.
- Recognized the district’s financial department staff for earning the ASBO Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting and GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
- Recognized the United Way of Denton County for its honor through the TASB Business Recognition Program.
- Recognized Byron Nelson student Maggie Barnett for earning Miss Majorette of Texas honors for her baton-twirling abilities.
- Approved a water line easement relocation with the city of Fort Worth for the construction of the district aquatic center.
- Approved architectural assignments for future construction projects. As a result, Huckabee will serve as the architectural firm designing the district networking operating center, Haslet Elementary School renovation to a district facility and Elementary School No. 20. Glenn Partners will provide architectural services for a new middle school design, should such facilities be approved by voters in future bond elections.
