FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Thank you for joining us on campus for Back-to-School Night, Digital Citizenship Parent nights, and Geometry Parent night. It has been a busy, but wonderful start to the new school year, and we appreciate the time you took out of your own schedules to make it happen.
During the month of September, we will begin celebrating class Masses with each grade level. These Masses will be held at 7:50 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Joseph as designated on the school's online calendar. Students scheduled to attend Mass must arrive no later than 7:40 a.m. and check in at the chapel entrance. Mass will begin promptly at 7:50 a.m. Students arriving after that time will be marked tardy.
All students within the designated grade level are expected to participate in Mass celebrations. If a student is absent or tardy on Mass days, the school attendance policy will apply. Students arriving early on campus who are not a member of grade level attending Mass will be supervised in the Fahey Learning Center from 7:50-8:20 a.m. Advisory check in for non-Mass students is 8:20-8:25 a.m. Teachers will be in meetings, and classrooms will be closed until 8:20 a.m.
As a reminder, our first Parent/Daughter Liturgy will be held Thursday, September 13, at 7:10 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Joseph. Please refer to the online school calendar for future dates. We look forward to seeing many of you there.
Thank you as always for your support,

VOTE FOR STA STUDENT IN BREAKTHROUGH JUNIOR CHALLENGE!
Grace Patenaude, STA sophomore, has been selected to compete in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for students designed to inspire creative thinking about Science. Students ages 13 to 18 from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit original videos (3 minutes in length maximum) that bring to life a concept or theory in the field of life sciences, physics or mathematics. The submissions are judged on the student's ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways.
Grace has made it through the first two rounds of the selection process and her video is now entering the Popular Vote Phase, which runs from September 7th - 20th. If Grace were to win the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, she would be awarded a $250,000 college scholarship, and STA would win a $100,000 state-of-the-art Breakthrough science lab to help inspire future generations of scientists.
Grace stated, "I attended a presentation at Linda Hall Library on the CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), a new gene-editing tool, just for fun. I chose to make my video on the CRISPR because I found it to be a fascinating new technology that holds a lot of potential and because few people know how it actually works. My passion, though, is filmmaking, which I hope to someday pursue as a part of my career. However, I will never give up my interest in science, and it will always inspire me in what I do."

NEW SERVICE EXTRACURRICULAR
|
|
G.I.V.E. (Get Involved. Value Everyone.) is St. Teresa's newest service extracurricular. The group's mission is to help students recognize the importance of helping the dear neighbor and to create a lifelong love of giving back. Through various projects throughout the year at a variety of organizations, G.I.V.E. provides opportunities for girls to get involved in the St. Teresa's community, the greater Kansas City community, and beyond. Being a student-run organization, advised by wonderful faculty, G.I.V.E. creates opportunities for students to grow as young women through leadership and service. Every girl (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) is welcome to participate as little or as much as she would like. The hours spent volunteering with fellow sisters can go towards the National Honor Society, Presidential Service Award, and
college applications
. However, volunteering at St. Teresa's isn't just about earning hours. Volunteering is an extension of St. Teresa's mission and sisterhood. From athletes to honor students to musicians, G.I.V.E.-rs serve the community and grow as young women alongside fellow students. We hope your STAR will consider becoming involved with G.I.V.E.

SAFETY AND SECURITY
As the school year gets rolling, it is important to practice some basic safety tips:
Personal and Vehicle Safety
It will be getting darker earlier which creates another security issue. Please be aware of your surroundings when parking and moving about campus. Remember to check your vehicle to ensure it is locked and there is nothing visible (purses, computers, phones, electronics, etc.). If you put items under your seat, make sure the item is not visible. Don't make yourself an easy target!
Digital Awareness
There was some great information presented on cyberbullying at the Digital Citizenship meeting. As a follow-up, here is some information from the Department of Homeland Security on the issue:
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released an announcement on the importance of addressing cyberbullying. As children return to school, FTC encourages parents and educators to monitor kids' online activity and engage in conversations about preventing cyberbullying.
The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) encourages users to review
the following resources for more information:
