Back to School: Did You Get Your Library Card?
September is Library Card Sign Up Month. Don't forget one of the most important (and cheapest!) things on your supply list: a Belmont Public Library card. Know you have a card
Fine Forgiveness Fairy is back!
but can't find it? Come in to the Library with photo ID and we'll give you one of our new cards for free during the month of September.

Fine Forgiveness
September 8th through September 22nd
In honor of Library Card Sign Up Month, we're forgiving fines. From  Saturday, September 8th through Saturday, September 22nd, return overdue or billed Belmont materials and we'll take care of the late fees. We are also waiving old overdue fines on Belmont items.

*Please note: All overdue fines on BELMONT items will be eligible for forgiveness. Charges for lost or damaged items are not eligible, nor are fines from other libraries.
Look Who's Reading Frankenstein!

Look who's reading Frankenstein, the 2018 title for the town-wide read, One Book One Belmont (OBOB). It's the Belmont Board of Selectmen - Mark Paolillo, Vice Chair; Tom Caputo; and Adam Dash, Chair - taking a few moments on a stormy day to talk about one of the most famous and influential horror stories ever written.
As in previous years, the Library will create READ posters that feature Belmont civic leaders, business people, artists, and educators, all reading  Frankenstein. The photos will be posted in the library, on our website  onebookonebelmont.com, and in the Belmont Citizen-Herald. The posters are being designed by graphic artist Adine Storer, with photographs taken by Adine and YA librarian Rachel Moir.

Our first 2018 READ poster. So cool. So gothic.

One Book One Belmont will be celebrated throughout the month of October, kicking off with a screening of Young Frankenstein at the Studio Cinema on Thursday, October 4th.  Other events include a field trip to the Russell Museum of Medical History and Innovation at MGH, a lecture on Chinese science fiction delivered in Chinese, a Frankenstein escape room for teens and adults, a robotics workshop for children, book discussions, music, pumpkin carving and more. The final program is a talk by Charlotte Gordon, associate professor of English at Endicott College, author of the book Romantic Outlaws: the extraordinary lives of Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter Mary Shelley.  View our flyer below under Events & Programs, and visit onebookonebelmont.com.

UPCOMING AUTHOR EVENTS
Lindsay Mattick
Monday, September 17th
7pm, Assembly Room
Part of the Friends Author Series, sponsored by the Friends of the Belmont Public Library

"A charming addition to Pooh lore that will send readers happily back to the Hundred-Acre Wood." - Kirkus Review

Expanding upon their Caldecott-winning picture book, 2015's Finding Winnie, Mattick and Blackall add Greenhut (the Flat Stanley series) to their team for this amplified tale of the bear who traveled from the Canadian woods across the Atlantic during World War I to the London Zoo, where she became the inspiration for Milne's Winnie the Pooh. Karyn Miller-Medzon, senior associate producer for WBUR's Here & Now, will be moderating this event.

Thursday, November 1st
7pm, Beech Street Center
266 Beech Street, Belmont MA

Charlotte Gordon wraps up our One Book One Belmont Frankenstein events this fall, with a discussion of her groundbreaking dual biography, which brings to life a pioneering English feminist and the daughter she never knew. Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein , has each been the subject of numerous biographies. Yet no author has ever examined both their lives in one book - until now.

Ted Reinstein
Thursday, November 8th
7pm, Library Assembly Room
Part of the Friends Author Series, sponsored by the Friends of the Belmont Public Library

Join Chronicle's Ted Reinstein as he takes us through the wooden doors of New England's general stores and back in time, into a Norman Rockwell painting and into the heart of America.
New England's General Stores offers a nostalgic picture of this colonial staple and, fortunately, steadfast institution of small towns from Connecticut to Maine. This is where children of each generation take their first allowance to buy their very own penny candy. Locals have swapped stories at these counters from gossip to whispers of revolution. In tough times, the general store treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. Stubborn as New Englanders themselves, the general store has refused to become a mere sentimental relic of an earlier age.
