PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello Everyone
Last week, my son’s school put on a math event which called for some “actors” to play characters in the event. Not one person signed up prior to the event when we listed the sign-up for actors.
At the event, when people came and read the script for the parts, we had over 20 people volunteer to “act in character”.
This was a great reminder of why so many of our board positions remain unfilled. The title can intimidate people from even considering the position. These positions remain open for the ISPTSA Board of Directors. I hope the brief descriptions inspire you to say “ I can do that”
President-Elect: Key elements to this position; Training position, good listener, Idea person. Will be elected to become the President the following year. Average amount of time per week, 1 Hr
(Listed so you can see what is ahead for president elect) President: Chief, knows everything about IS, asked about opinions and decisions all the time from everyone. Good listener. Been at IS more than 2-3 years, Average amount of time per week 2-3 Hrs.
Secretary: Main purpose is to take notes or minutes from a board meeting or general meeting. Notes can be very detailed or minimal. The meeting minutes are the legal document of the board proceedings and the key decisions need to be recorded. Average amount of time per week 1hr.
Treasurer 2: Responsible for deposits, donations, corporate matching donations. Online payments, membership dues. Uses an accounting software called Moneyminder. No accounting experience is required. Average amount of time per week 2 hrs.
VP of Communications: Responsible for overseeing the people serving and the committees for Monday Messenger/Web Content, Website, DirectorySpot, and Bulletin Boards. Average amount of time per week 1 hr.
VP Fundraising: responsible for our direct contribution campaign in the fall and plans for the Spring fundraiser. We already have a fall campaign in place, just sending reminders and reporting about it to the board is the major responsibility. Average amount of time per week 1 hr.
For a PTSA board serving the community well, many people think it will just continue as it always has but the PTA has term limits and people do to. If you like the way the PTSA is serving our school, please think about helping us continue our fine traditions and step up and serve.
Best,
Meribeth Nordloef-Pedersen

MONDAY MESSENGER WINS SILVER AWARD AT WASHINGTON STATE PTA
At the State PTA Convention,
ISPTSA picked up the
silver award in the
Outstanding E-blast category. The 12 e-blasts submitted were from March of 2017-Feburary 2018, and were judged in the areas of PTA’s vision and mission, Advocacy, Committee news, Community news, Membership and other areas. Congratulations to the team consisting of Michelle Surkan, Stephanie Winkler-Hadley, Leonardo Barros Barreto and David Doud. We are looking for a Monday Messenger Editor and VP of Communications for the 2018-2019 year. No prior PTA experience needed, training provided. Super opportunity to be a voice for our IS community. If interested, please contact Michelle or Meribeth.

FINAL DONATIONS FOR THE 2017-2018 YEAR NEEDED

While we raised 62% of our goal at the auction, we need your continued support to help us keep these benefits next year. ISPTSA RECRUITING BOARD POSITIONS
We are very seriously looking for a few more officers to fill our board for the 2018-2019 year. Maybe you served in the PTA when your student was in elementary school.
Come on back and serve again. Graduating senior? but a 6-7th grader still at IS,
come on back and serve again. There are many of us that have served multiple rolls in various PTA’s over the years. That experience will serve us well BUT we also welcome people who have not served on a PTA board for their inquisitiveness, fresh perspective and willingness to serve. Please see our list of
past board of directors on ISPTSA. Many of these folks are still at IS.
The Board serves many functions but in the eyes of the school, it provides funding for academic excellence. Unfortunately, if we do not have a full functioning board for next year, the money cannot be voted on to be given to the school. We have to have a board to fund the school requests. The ISPTSA board completes the circle and the money flows.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
A big thank you to everyone that took the time this last year to answer the question of the week. Many of the questions we asked had results that were of interest to the administration and will help us plan programming for ISPTSA next year. We will end the QW this year and start up again in the Fall. Here is the results of the latest question of the week.
PTSA and your money
How much do you think PTSA contributes to the school financially?
25% of donations collected 0%
50% of donations collected 0%
75% of donations collected 60%
100% of donations collected 40%
Of all the donations received by ISPTSA, over 75% of donations go to fund IS.
Of the 400+ families at IS, how many IS families have donated to the PTSA?
15 families 0%
25 families 0%
50 families 0%
100 families 100%
Of the 400+ families at IS, we have a very generous community of over 100+ families contributing to ISPTSA.
If you donate financially to PTSA, when do you like to submit a donation?

5T
H GRADE BBQ 6/7/2018 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Thursday, June 7th. Please come and help the ISPTSA welcome these new families to International School!
There are several ways you can help: donate bottled water, come for an hour to help setup/cleanup, or join us in welcoming new parents and answering questions.

FINANCIAL REVIEW COMMITTEE
A Big Thanks to the following IS parents who volunteered to serve on our Financial Review committee. They performed a midyear financial review for the ISPTSA. A financial review is necessary twice a year to maintain a PTA in good standing. A review also confirms to the board their fiduciary responsibility with ISPTSA funds. Thanks to
Susan Hainze,
Sophia Cheng,
Cathy Stevens and
Vaiju Bal for performing this duty. Those picnic tables at IS served a great purpose.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

International will be holding it’s first (and hopefully annual) Déjeuner en Blanc field day on

This is where we need your help:
• Do you have an old white sheet, blanket or tablecloth we could use as a picnic blanket?
• Do you have a white shade canopy we could use for the afternoon?
• Would you like to help with set-up, chaperoning and/or clean-up?
If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, please contact Traci Sullivan at

FREE YES EVENT ON TEEN SUICIDE PREVENTION 6/4
Youth Eastside Services(YES) would like to invite you to attend our upcoming event "
13 Reasons Why...To Have a Conversation with Your Child." This event was originally developed in response to the release of the second season of 13 Reasons Why, but with the recent loss of three youths in our community the event has become even more critical.
This is a free, educational event for parents that will facilitate a conversation around the second season of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and offer parents resources to engage with their child on the topics of suicide, depression, and anxiety; and how our community and schools are responding to the increased risk.
We will have four panelists: YES counselor Michelle Brode, Megan Kennedy from the University of Washington who has been developing a comprehensive suicide prevention plan, Matt Gillingham Director of Student Services at Lake Washington School District, and Renee Jones and Cailyn Griffith from the Crisis Clinic.
For the sake of our youth and the community we hope you will be able to join us. The event is free but space is limited so please register below.
