ST. CATHERINE'S QUILTERS GROUP
|

A group from St. Catherine's meets to talk and make lap quilts, which we then donate to Manor Care, or to someone from St. Catherine's who might need a bit of TLC. Our next meeting is set for Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine's. This will the first time we will have met at church. During this time, we can discuss the best day/time for future meetings, how to share patterns and maybe even sew a bit. We always welcome anyone who might be interested in learning to make a quilt or just to be a part of this ministry. No sewing experience is needed, just a pair or willing hands.

Rev. Laurie's Message
It was three years ago this month that the vestry started the conversation about St. Catherine's having a more permanent home, and here we are a year and a half into having our own building!
I'd like to remind you of some of the things that were inherent in our use of the Manogue Chapel and how that has changed:
We were invisible. Other than the banners that were so faithfully put up by our volunteers on S. Virginia Street, the Manogue fence and lawn on Saturday or Sunday, there was no way for anyone to be aware of our presence. Now we have signage on a major street 24/7. We're seeing new people who are coming to worship with us.
We had no space from which to minister to the people around us. As gracious as the Manogue staff was, many of us experienced the shared-use issues that came up from time to time. Now we have our own space in which to worship, to meet, to enjoy a shared meal. We have space that we are now sharing with others who need a place to meet.
We had no consistent place to meet other than on Sundays. Our office was in my home. If I needed to meet with someone, it was in a Starbuck's, at Trinity or St. Paul's. Now we have an office available whenever needed.
So now that we have this great space, what else can we do with this beautiful building? What is God calling us to be and do at 10435 Double R Boulevard? What ideas do you have? How can we address the needs of those living around us in South Reno? We'll be having a conversation about this between services in the upcoming weeks. Keep an eye out for the date and time.

St. Catherine's Prayer Group
Ephesians 6:18 "Pray in the spirit on all occasions with all kinds of requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for the Lord's people."
Approximately four years ago, a group of us at St. Catherine's met and formed our prayer group - and we are still praying. Prayers are confidential, and so it seems has been the knowledge of our presence! Please contact either Rev. Laurie or myself with prayers for those you have on your hearts.
Sundays we will put out a basket in the entry for prayer requests and they will be included in the "Prayers of the People" for that Sunday. If you would like prayers to be added to the Prayer Group list, contact Rev. Laurie or myself. We ask that you update us with your requests - we love moving your requests to the "Thanksgiving" portion of our list! To keep the list as current as possible, please contact one of us by the 1

of each month if you wish your request to remain on the list.

Senior Bundles Collection in September

It is now time to collect items for the seniors at Life Care Center. The items will be collected in the month of September and blessed the last Sunday of September, the 30th. There will be a board set up with items needed by the seniors on the first Sunday of September, the 2nd. Please take cards as you are able and then bring the item/s back the following Sunday or no later than the 30th.
Items requested are socks for men and women, greeting cards ( such as Christmas cards, get well, birthday, sympathy, thank you, and blank note cards) body wash and body lotion for men and women, shampoo and conditioner for men and women, shaving cream, after shave lotion, hand lotion, tooth paste, tooth brushes (single packs), nail polish remover, cotton puffs, emery boards, nail polish (subtle colors) small purses, large print crossword puzzle books, and large print word search books.
Thank you again for all that you do for these seniors to make their life a bit easier. (From Life Care) Thank you for all you do for our residents.

Saint Catherine's Search for a New Rector

Your vestry has been actively engaged in the process of finding a new rector pending Laurie's retirement on March 1st, 2019. A summary of our activities is as follows.
To start the process we've met several times with Canon Catherine Gregg to define the values of Saint Catherine's and the characteristics of our parish. The vestry then met with Bishop Dan Edwards on April 12th to discuss the options available for finding a new Rector. There are basically two approaches, a full search for rector candidates throughout the US, or a more targeted search using the resources of the Diocese. The vestry chose the more targeted search, which is a more cost effective approach.
The vestry has appointed Charlie Dickinson as Chairman of our search committee. Charlie has been involved in a search before and will be preparing a profile of Saint Catherine's, which will be a historical resource for a new rector. Also, we have been polling the congregation to define the characteristics that we would like to see in a new Rector. Your input will be included in Saint Catherine's profile.
On August 23rd, the vestry met again with Canon Catherine to further our review options and possible candidates. We were pleased to find we have three possible candidates that look very capable. The Diocese is assessing whether these candidates feel called to serve at Saint Catherine's with more news to follow.

Let's Get Together for Fellowship

I had so much fun at our recent congregational retreat at Lake Tahoe. It made me yearn for more fellowship; I hope you feel the same.
I hear that St. Catherine's had monthly dinner get-togethers in the past. It would be nice to get the congregation together more often. I'd like to know how many people would like to participate in a rotating monthly meal.
I might suggest Thursday nights, Friday nights, or possibly on a weekend for brunch or lunch.
I'm willing to coordinate these events if there is congregational interest.

'Welcome to Mars': Resettling Refugees in Reno

Thanks in part to St. Catherine's, five families from four different countries have been resettled in Northern Nevada since May 23, 2018.
The sponsoring agency for these people is the Northern Nevada International Center (NNIC). The number of people in those families (30) exceeds the total number of refugees resettled through NNIC in
all
of 2017.
The numbers don't communicate much about the people, though. They come from Afghanistan, from the Republic of Congo, from Kenya, from Eritrea, from Syria. They are sometimes frightened, sometimes happy and grateful, sometimes angry, or all of the above. Some speak no English, and some are fluent. Some are totally traumatized by the difference between where they came from and where they have ended up. It must be like landing on Mars.
Some are simply relieved and grateful to be here. They have often lived in unbelievably squalid refugee camps for years. All have undergone the laborious two-year process of qualifying to immigrate to the United States.
They need
everything
, from clothes to food to furniture to personal care supplies. NNIC is usually notified of their arrival the day before they need to be picked up at the airport. Simply put, the involvement of volunteers in this process is often chaotic and always rewarding.
The generosity of St. Catherine's has been enormous, despite the often-short notice. Some of our members welcomed families at the airport. Some cooked a "first night" meal of food from the families' respective native countries. I sent an e-mail to five St. Catherine's volunteers one Friday in June, listing the items needed for one family. On Sunday, they delivered enough "stuff" to fill my CR-V.
It was such a privilege to be the person who delivered the bounty and even better to see the look on little Shaima's (aged 1) face when she was able to flip through the "board books" donated by one St. Catherine's volunteer. The bright-colored handmade pillow cases and quilt provided by that same person were welcomed by one of the African families. The dinnerware and special cutlery for tiny hands donated by yet another volunteer were delivered for use by Maryam (aged 3) and her family. Her mother and father were grateful for the food and other supplies, but especially for the toys and special things that made their daughters smile.
It's one thing to see TV reports of refugees pouring through the Mediterranean to Germany and Spain and Greece. It's another to meet people who have fled the same kind of persecution and ended up here.
The incoming tide of refugees to Northern Nevada has slowed over the past month, due to the limitations on immigration of all kinds. The NNIC families have been moved to permanent housing, most of the adults are employed, and the children are in school. Our work as volunteers is not over. Many still need to learn English, learn to drive, get their green cards, and accomplish all the other tasks necessary for their new lives. It is difficult to think of the privations suffered by the thousands who are living in camps, or trying to escape persecution in their native countries. But... what we did made a difference to these 30 people, and that difference will echo through the rest of their lives.
As Laurie has said in her sermons, the "starfish principle" works. Thanks, St. Catherine's!

Alleviate Hunger with 'Empty Bowls'
|
Attend the 9th Annual "Empty Bowls" dinner and auction to help fund the fight against local hunger.
On Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 6-8 p.m. at The Grand Sierra Resort, support the Community Food Pantry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sparks, which provides emergency food assistance to our neighbors in need. All proceeds from the Empty Bowls Event will support this local mission.
Bowls are painted by members of the community, and then auctioned at the event where a simple soup and salad dinner is served.

"Baby Bundles" is composed of and supported by members of St. Catherine's and Trinity Episcopal Churches.
With items donated by both congregations, volunteers assemble "Bundles" of layette items for St. Mary's and Renown hospitals. They are then distributed by hospital staff to disadvantaged new parents who have little or nothing for their newborn. Any help with the following items would be greatly appreciated:

- Bibs for boys and girls
- Girls' receiving blankets

Last Saturday, Aug. 18, Galilee Episcopal Camp and Retreat Center on the shores of Lake Tahoe welcomed a group from St. Catherine's for a day of fresh air, fellowship, fabulous
food and fun. This property, owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada, is truly an oasis of beauty that we are fortunate to enjoy.
Together we relaxed and marveled over the views. We also got some great exercise! Some of us were shuttled to nearby Spooner Lake, where we hiked its 2-mile trail. Others of us kayaked out onto the massive blue beauty of Lake Tahoe. We all ate heartily, outside on picnic tables together, family-style. The dining hall had its special Galilee-Blend coffee on tap, too ... and the fun went on into the evening, ending with a sing-along around the campfire.
We hope to have this "St. Catherine's Fun Day at Galilee" next year, too, as it was such a spectacular way to spend a Saturday -- the perfect getaway on a hot August day.
