Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges received $1 Million in
CARES Act Funding
|
|
California Consulting client, Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges, received $1,000,000 in LA County CARES Act funding to support community college students experiencing food insecurity in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Foundation’s efforts concentrate on serving students with dependent children. This proposal was written by Project Manager Jake Whitaker, working hand-in-hand with the Foundation’s dedicated staff.
Los Angeles Community College District’s 2016 Survey on Food & Housing Insecurity, conducted by HOPE labs, found that 62.7% of the student body reported experiencing food security in the year prior to the survey being conducted. 55% of the student body also reported experiencing housing insecurity. These results paint a portrait of a population already facing a very unstable economic outlook, even during a period of economic growth. The sudden disruption caused by COVID-19 and the ensuing economic fallout only further exacerbates these underlying issues for vulnerable populations. The 2016 survey also showed that students with dependent children faced higher rates of food insecurity and housing insecurity than the general student population.
Assistance funded by the CARES Act provided support for food, including direct deliveries of food to students’ homes, as well as grocery cards that included information about applying for the CalFresh program. In order for this initiative to have the maximum level of reach and impact, the Foundation partnered with the Los Angeles Valley College Family Resource Center. The FRC, created in 2000, was formed to advance social and economic mobility for families throughout the Los Angeles region by reducing barriers to higher education and jobs through integrated family support services. LAVC’s FRC is the first and only family resource center on a community college campus in California.
California Consulting salutes the Foundation’s diligent work to serve marginalized students and serve as part of the regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an honor to support them in their work. Thank you!
