Gary Greetings in the name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

Part of our reading this Sunday from Mark reads: " Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile." For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."

I would like to share a story with you:  Perhaps you've heard the story of the frail old man who went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson.  The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.  The family ate together at the table.  But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult.  Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.  When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.  The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.

"We must do something about Grandfather," said the son.  "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."  So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner.  There Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.  Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.  Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.  The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.  He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?"  Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up."

The four year old smiled and went back to work.  The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.  Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.  That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.  For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family.  And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

This story teaches us a number of things, 1) Children are sometimes our best teachers and 2) when we anger and become focused on our own comforts and the discomforts of others we become one with the hypocrites and Pharisees.

See ya Sunday!

Blessings,
Fr. Gary+

Pastoral Care News

We have two new programs involving Pastoral Care:
  • Visitation Partners - volunteers from the congregation who keep in contact (calls, emails, visits, cards, etc.) with parishioners with long-term health or other concerns. They give a general report to the committee once a month. We still have a few folks who need visitors, so if you are interested in this important ministry, or know someone who could benefit from it, please contact Deacon Martha.
  • Grief program - All Saints has a long history of taking care of families of parishioners who have died by providing a meal and supporting them individually through cards and visits immediately after the death. We also offer the Blue Service around the holidays, because the holidays can be such a difficult time for families, even years after someone has died. The Deacons are implementing a new program that consists of thoughtful and helpful mailings about the grieving process sent at 3 month intervals throughout the first year of loss. There are also specialized mailings for dealing with the holidays and special types of loss (suicide, infant death). Please make sure you let the Deacons know if you know of a parishioner who has lost an immediate family member (spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, or grandchild). We started the program August 1.
We also have another new program that we hope to have in place within the next few weeks. Before he died, Terry Nichols had been talking with Deacon Martha and Christine Borner about beginning a support group for folks with mental health issues, such as depression, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, etc. We are working to form such a group that would meet at the church and call it "Terry's Group" in memory of him. The group would meet once a week for information and support, probably on Mondays. More details about an upcoming informational meeting will be provided soon. This is not to be a therapy group and is not meant to replace visits with doctors or therapists. Eventually we would like to begin another support group for family members of those who have these issues. If you, or someone you know might benefit from such a group, please contact Deacon Martha or Christine Borner.

*  BREAD MINISTRY COORDINATOR needed!  As you know, our last day with you is September 23.  Among, other things, I coordinate the Bread Ministry.  It is an extremely EASY ministry to do.  It literally can be done in an hour or less (the scheduling part). We have faithful volunteers who each take a month and pass the "bread bag" to each other. I usually schedule in January, and All Saints is scheduled through January 2019.  If you would like to talk about this ministry, please let me know!  Chris Butterworth 704-396-6053

Beautification of The Life Center Foyer & Offices:  Thanks to all of you who contributed to the painting fund for the Family Life Center.  Donations of $2,760.00 were received.  The painting cost was $3,148.00.  The carpet was paid with funds raised from the Yard Sale this past year.  Thanks to all who helped in this project to keep our building in good shape.

*  Ministry Schedule:  The September through December ministry schedule is available on the table in the Family Life Center.

*  Family Promise:  The remaining 2018 date that we will be host to the Family Promise guests are 11/4. Family Promise is a community program that provides housing and support to families that are less fortunate. All Saints is one of the original churches that helped establish this ministry more than ten years ago. We host families in this ministry four times a year at our parish facilities with assistance from the Redeemer Lutheran Church here in Gastonia. There are many ways to support this ministry. During hosting weeks we need parishioners to greet and engage guests, to provide homework and enrichment activities for the children, to prepare and serve dinner, and to spend the night. The other way that parishioners can assist these families is to donate items that our guests need. Suggested items to donate are clothes, detergent, toothbrushes and toothpaste, small first aid kits, hair products, soap and/or body wash, suitcases (both used or new), 10, 20, and 30 gallon storage tubs w/ lids, towels and washcloths (both used or new), bed linens (both used or new), family friendly movies or videos, board games, & craft supplies.  For more information, or to volunteer please contact Marc Dudley at 704-718-4044 or [email protected].

* Cooking for the Army :  On Saturday, September 8th at 9am, parishioners will gather to cook approximately 700 meals for The Salvation Army & Cornerstone Ministry. We are always in need of more hands to assist in this life-giving project since "more hands make light work." If you are interested in this ministry, please contact the church office and we will put your name on the monthly e-mail reminder.

*  Building Use Policy :  Our buildings are being used more and more and we are experiencing more scheduling conflicts with our church spaces. Effective immediately, all rooms/buildings will be reserved and scheduled ONLY by the Parish Administrator through a submission form available at the office.  For planning purposes every parishioner is able to access the Church Calendar, which reflects reserved rooms and activities, on our website ( www.allsaintsgastonia.org ) by using the News & Events tab. Additionally, if you are in need of advance set-up for the room or event you are scheduling (night before, earlier than the event, etc.) please take that into consideration when reserving. We appreciate your understanding realizing that this will improve our ability to serve our parishioners and ministries.

*  Bible Study :   Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis is the book being studied.  We have just gotten started so if you would like to join us please do so on Wednesday's in the Family Life Center at 10:00.

* Parish Nurse Ministry:  blood pressures will be taken on the second Sunday of the month  after the 8 and 10:30 services .  Nurses interested in the parish nurse ministry please contact Cheryl Saylor, MSN.

*  Yoga at All Saints:  Wednesdays  Noon to 1 PM  - $5 (multi-level Beginning )  Integral Style Traditional Hatha Yoga. (This is the ancient style which is gentle, personal, go at your own pace) Our country changed the ancient yoga into all kinds of fun interesting sometimes not so safe competitive practices .  Our classes are based on safety in movement  and include the healing breathing techniques and stress reducing relaxation.   Judy devoted her teaching to bringing the "real" ancient technique to people at a very reasonable cost because it is so healing and personal.

Saturdays  9AM to11 AM  (multi-level advanced) Integral Style Traditional Hatha Yoga.  Again, this class is go at your own pace, gentle and personal.  It is a 2 hour practice.   ( if you are athletic or exercise a lot this class may feel like a more thorough  practice)  People come to both classes with physical problems if their doctor approves and modify the practice as needed.  ($7 a class - Half of each $7 fee is donated to All Saints).

Stretch, Strengthen, Balance, Tone, Breathe, Focus, Relax and Heal.  Any questions, contact Judy Blankenship, M.A., CPT, ERYT 500, Reiki Master (704) 867-7176   [email protected]

*  Book Exchange : The book exchange is set-up in the Family Life Center in a bookcase along the wall to your left when entering the big room.  Read and return and perhaps contribute some you have as well.  Thanks to Jim Braddy for donating the book case.

*  Zumba:  Now being offered 2 days a week in the Family Life Center!
     - Tuesday & Thursday at 7:15PM:  Please join Dana Wolfe for a fun workout made for everyone.  The class that started the dance-fitness revolution and changed the way we look at a "workout" forever. It's fun, effective and best of all? Made for everyone!  ($5/class or $20/month)

*  First Sunday of the month Coffee Hour:  We need someone to set up and clean up only
for Coffee Hour on Parish Breakfast Sunday.  You do not have to provide any food, just set out the food left from breakfast.  Please sign up for this on the Coffee Hour sign-up sheet.

*  Food Pantry:  Please help us restock the shelves!  Through your generosity, we have been able to help many families and individuals.

*  Preaching ROTA (rotation) at All Saints: We are blessed at All Saints to hear three different voices in preaching. Each one of our clergy; Gary, Cris and Martha, have experienced the world and see the world differently and through different lenses.  Because our community is made up of different people from different experiences we need to hear different voices. At All Saints, Deacon Cris preaches on the 3rd  Sunday of each month, Deacon Martha preaches on the 1st  Sunday of alternate months, and Fr. Gary preaches the other Sundays. We hope you find the different voices fulfilling in your spiritual journey.

*  Salvation Army Service Schedule:  Monday, September 3rd - Team #4.  (Carol Maiden)

* Prayer List:  Our prayer list grows rapidly.  We ask all parishioners to keep the office informed so that our prayer list remains current and manageable.

*  Partnership: All Saints has entered into a relationship with the YMCA's Resource Connection Gateway.  This relationship enables us to help those in need more rapidly and efficiently while also addressing long-term needs versus only addressing immediate concerns.  If you would like more information please see Fr.  This Sunday's Scripture Readings

The Collect

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9

Moses said: So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God with which I am charging you.

You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!" For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is whenever we call to him? And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today?

But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children's children.

Psalm 15

L ord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? *
who may abide upon your holy hill?
2 Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, *
who speaks the truth from his heart.
3 There is no guile upon his tongue;
he does no evil to his friend; *
he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor.
4 In his sight the wicked is rejected, *
but he honors those who fear the  Lord.
5 He has sworn to do no wrong *
and does not take back his word.
6 He does not give his money in hope of gain, *
nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
7 Whoever does these things *
shall never be overthrown.

The Epistle: James 1:17-27

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act-they will be blessed in their doing.

If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

The Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

'This people honors me with their lips,
                but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
                teaching human precepts as doctrines.'
You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile." For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."

Saint Day / Feast of the Week

Prudence Crandall
Teacher and Prophetic Witness, 1890

Born to a Quaker family in Rhode Island in 1803, Prudence Crandall
was educated in arithmetic, the sciences, and Latin at the New
England Friend's Boarding School in Rhode Island. The Quakers, or
"Friends," believed that women should be educated, and it was in the
environment of the Friend's Boarding School that Prudence Crandall's
passion for teaching was first awakened.

In 1831, Crandall started a girl's school in Canterbury, Connecticut,
where she educated the daughters of the town's wealthy families.
In 1833 she admitted to her school a young African American girl
named Sarah Harris. Harris wanted an education so that she could in
turn teach other African American children. The parents of the white
children at Crandall's school were outraged and demanded Harris's
expulsion, but Crandall refused and decided to open a new school for
African American girls.

Despite repeated attempts by town members to close the school,
and even threats to destroy it, Crandall persevered in her labors. She
enlisted the help of William Lloyd Garrison, editor of The Liberator,
the nation's major antislavery newspaper. Through his paper and
advocacy, Garrison spread awareness of her cause all over the nation.

However, later in 1833, the state legislature passed the so-called
"Black Law," which made it a crime to open a school that taught
black children from any state other than Connecticut. Crandall, who
had received pupils from other states, was arrested, jailed, and tried.
She was eventually convicted, but a higher court reversed the decision.
Far from subsiding, the harassment she endured grew worse, and,
fearing for the safety of her students, she closed her school in 1834.

After her husband died in 1874, Crandall moved to Elk Falls, Kansas.
In 1886 the Connecticut stage legislature awarded her a pension.
In a petition signed by more than a hundred citizens of that state,
many expressed their regret and shame over her treatment. Mark
Twain attempted to persuade the state to buy back her original home
in Canterbury. Prudence Crandall died in 1890, and today she is
recognized as the official State Heroine of Connecticut.
