Dear Neighbor,
Summer is still going strong with school right around the corner beginning September 4th. Our school supply drive is in full swing so that our students have the tools they need for a successful school year. Please spread the word so that this year's drive is bigger and better.
Pencils, composition notebooks, crayons, and copy paper are the top items on the wish list.
Legislative Update
The General Assembly adjourned on time with a budget, which gives us time to return to our districts and meet with our constituents, participate in street festivals, and speak to community organizations.
Bills that passed both chambers in the spring are currently awaiting the Governor's signature to become law.
He has the option to sign legislation into law, veto legislation, or offer his edits through a process called "amendatory veto." The Governor has signed a few bills that I sponsored and we are awaiting action on several others.
Local Control of Liquor Licenses
On August 2nd the Governor signed a business friendly, common sense law that will permit local government to take control of liquor licenses instead of having to go to Springfield for approval.
Under previous law, businesses seeking to serve alcohol in certain locations had to receive permission from the General Assembly and Governor.
Senate Bill 2436 reforms an arcane law by allowing local governments control of the exemption process.
This was a special bill signing ceremony as it took place right in our community at Eggsperience at 3233 N. Broadway.
Expanding Health Care Access
On July 13th,
legislation I sponsored improving access to healthcare by increasing access to physician assistants became law.
Under previous law, only five physician assistants were permitted to practice in collaboration with one doctor, which restricted access to health care. This arbitrary ratio is now gone, and the new law will enable highly trained medical professionals to work in our hospitals and improve healthcare in regions where staffing shortages exist.
About half of the counties in Illinois are marked as "Health Professional Shortage Areas," and are particularly vulnerable due to lack of medical professionals. This legislation exempts physician assistants from the ratio in these regions to meet the needs of these hospitals. In other counties, the ratio improves from 5-to-1 to 7-to-1.
Illinoisans are now one step closer to receiving the health care they deserve no matter where they live.
We are all looking forward to enjoying the last few weeks of summer as the calendar moves towards fall (and dare I say, "playoff baseball.")

Opposing Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court Nomination
The appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court will set reproductive rights back a generation. We need Governor Rauner to promise that he will keep Illinois pro-choice.

Women of Valor Award
I was joined (left to right) by Museum of Tolerance Director and event moderator Liebe Geft, Shiza Shahid, Jaha Dukureh and Wiesenthal Center Midwest Director Alison Slovin at the Women of Valor Award Luncheon on Thursday, June 21 in Chicago.
I was honored to receive the award from the Simon Wiesenthal Center alongside warrior women like Jaha Dukureh and Shiza Shahid. Across the globe women are stepping up and making a big impact.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center is a human rights organization committed to confronting anti-Semitism, hate, and terrorism. The Center strives to promote human rights on a global scale, and teach the lessons of the Holocaust. The Simon Wiesenthal Center recognized us due to our personification of the Center's values through our impactful work around the globe.
